Perhaps a better thread title would have been Steven Pro's Cyanide Article instead of Pro (as in the opposite of con) Cyanide Article. ;)

That's what I thought this thread was about also Steven.

Who would think that cyanide was a good thing?

Looking forward to your talk at MARS later this month.

Cyanide is defended all the time in de-facto.

When a PIJAC 'fact finding'mission to Manila found no problem back in 86.
When Blasiola and Goldstien found no evidence of harm in it then...
When exporters front money to middlemen to buy a drum to take back to the provinces...
When dealers who signed the MAC letter of commitment continue to willingly deal in it....
When certified facilities continue to deal in it...
When hobbyists choose the environmental consideration dead last on their list...and when dealers follow in kind....
When a token frag a finger...ignore the reef type environmentalism becomes the new credo...
When divers beg for netting and are turned down by every one they deal with including the reform institutions....
Why it has supporters and financiers everywhere in every sector.
Always did. How do you think it remains as current a phenomena as it does?

Actually Steven the goal of a headline is to grab attention and make the readers interested in learning what the article is about. I believe the thread title as it stands does that pretty effectively. Besides it is quickly explained in the first sentence. If you'd like me to change it however I will. Say the word.

That is ok Mitch. Anyone who actually needs the article should not come to the conclusion that I am encouraging the usage of cyanide.

"Cyanide velly good, it how you use it!"

I heard this a few years ago at one of the initial MAC meetings in LA and still remember it vividly. It was said by one of the guys from Indo, I wish I could remember his last name or still had his card.

JT,
I had drinks w/ that guy and Barnett of Global.
He was hilarious and very self convinced. He was proud of the greater skill as he put it of Indonesian cyanide fishers over the Filipinos.
Then, the next hour I remember lunch w/ Pijac and Holthus of MAC.
Even more surreal.

The good times are still a comin.
Ruwi, of the netcaught village of Les, Bali and Ferdie of Philippine net training fame are coming to the Marine Ornamentals conference to take part in the trade sustainability panel.
New on this card will be Andy Bruckner of the USCRTF searching for answers.
So will the indefatigable Dr Rubec and the irrascible Burton Patrick, AMDAs new pres.
Eric Borneman is also on that card as well as members of the MAC tribe.
This alledgedly combustible mixture has already cost a casualty Reefcheck bowed out of the panel from the outset.
Although we have always had civilized panel discussions at most conferences, for some reason the free speech anticipated at this one was somehow thought to be more ominous.

You hope it'll be livlier?
Generally people hope it will be less so.
Remember....in this odd culture of pop aquarium science, behavior is everthing...sustance nothing.
Its all about socializing among urban types and nothing of reefs and poor fisherman.
MAC got away with still another two years of no production beyond the self generated quarterly reports citing marvelous progress and greater things to come.
[Ruwi and Ferdie on the other hand create, generate and enhance net collecting on a routine basis.]
Few call them on this stunning slow and no motion performance and I have been told that the reason is because those that feed them and support them are also such a part of the social eco scene and that the lack of results are routine, normal and dovetail nicely with all the rest.
Clamoring for faster results is equal to clamoring for less project time, fewer paychecks and a shorter time to milk this cow.
If I thought it would make a difference, I would be less diplomatic and social and listen to Wayne constructive advice about tactics of influence.

Here is a more appropriate shot of Paul. I would post most cheerful pictures of the panel, but I can't find any.

Dr. Pratt making a point. And I found a happy shot of Ruwi.

PS
This was not a photo opt session to be sure. If fact I think some them didn't really want to be there on the panel with each other. This was a historic reunion and that is the only reason for the photos at all. It was a good discussion and I'm not trying to make light of that.

I started to call the post bum shot and more, but I'm not sure people would have understood the joke. All in good fun.
Ohh, I think everyone including Wayne would have got it
