Just be stealth. And for God's sake don't let the public see the 80% DOA. :P

I hope you realize the above was in jest. We often get our orders in around 3:00 PM and just put it out normally. What do you see as the problem?

We try as much as possible to do it during closed hours. Too many "helpers" show up and it causes chaos. I realize people are just trying to be helpful, as well as scope out their next purchase (we do NOT sell right out of the bag/box), but when you have 4 people all asking, "where should this go?" it gets a bit frustrating!

We usually arrange for a flight that arrives in the evening and unpack either after closing time, or before we open in the morning, depending on when the stuff arrives.

Then we can keep lights low/off too.. less stress.

That last line explains it all from my perspective. We try to get it in early and then if it gets bumped we still get it within 24 hours most of the time. Pretty much all the flights from LA to Nashville are transfer since it is not a hub city. Waiting until the next day puts more stress on the fish and inverts. Probably more than lower light helps. We pay extra for SW Rush service but can't really afford NFG on a regular basis. I've spent many a night working until midnight letting out the fish. It makes it rough when you have to be back in around 8:30 AM, but no one ever told me having a fish store was a walk in the park. Once I have it here at the store I'm going to start getting it ready to let out. I'm not leaving anything in the bags any longer than absolutely necessary. Being 2.5 hours round trip away from the airport complicates things a bit.

heh when i had shipments come in during the day (back when i was, yes, you read it here, trans-shipping 8O ! ) i'd shut all the SW dept's tank lights off, regardless of whether or not the customers got pissed off-i'd rather gain the mortality reduction than appease some yahoo that has no patience ;)

fwiw-i've worked with different acclimation 'setups' in stores-from the 'we have to float and acclimate in the tanks because we have no room for a proper acclimation room' to a very nice 'trough' arrangement, where the water circ. loop of the SW system (fish only) could be diverted to a slanted trough-the fish were placed in plastic shoeboxes w/airstones, and sodium biphosphate was added to the trough loop water to drop the pH (the water was otherwise fairly identical to the system's water.)the low pH water would drip very fast into the shoeboxes from gang valves with airline tubing overhead, and it would run overnite...

next day, after the low pH water allowed the fish to flush out ammonia from their tissue, the pH would be gradually increased over a few hours, and the fish placed into their respective tanks, still w/lights off, when possible

mortality was generally very low-even for trans-shipped fish.

I'm lucky insofar as I'm a direct flight from LAX or SNA... there are a couple of flights we prefer, and we usually time our orders as such. I can probably count the number of times we've been bumped on one hand - and sometimes it's to an earlier flight. Yep, we've spent many a late night... our actual preferred flight arrives at 8:30 PM which means we can't pick it up til 10:30 PM (2 hour recovery and actually ATL asks for 3 hour recovery...ugh!) so by the time we get back here it's usually midnight or a bit later (45 min one-way to the airport in off-peak hours). Yep it means late nights... but better for the fish (we land them and tank them within about 14 hours of their being packed) so it's really just a "comes with the territory" sort of thing.

Having recently received a shipment of net-caught fishes from Ferdinand Cruz, I can empathize with the retailers who posted here. We are conducting a study using chemical additives in the shipping bags.

I am curious concerning what steps you take to control stress-related diseases?

Hi Lourdes
What on average would you say your DOA )dead on arrival percentage would be?

What further percentage would you lose in the first week?

Typically what species would you have the highest DOA and week?
Thanks
Wayne

thanks , so much . let me start by saying my Parent's own the shop, we have been in bussiness for about 4 year's and our salt has gone from just a couple tanks to actually walls of tanks. typical mom and pop, there something that could alway's be better , early morning flight's are ideal , but there have been a few late night ones. were 45 min from the airport which is a great ride back and fourth ...

this is so true , we don't sell anything out of the bag , we hold onto stuff till it's ready , no reason to shoot ourselves in the leg especially since we are to small and to good of people to do it that way Jenn I enjoy reading your post , you tell like it is ! I will definetly try to work harder with the wholesaler i'm going to try harder to arrange flight's that work better for us , and the store

this is somehting we have a hard time with. shop's open but lite's are off in the saltwater , and the saltwater is right when you come in the door , it's not a section of the store , it's on the main floor and it's right when you walk in so mad dad would prefer to have the t-5's off but not the overhead's .

hello, Doa can always be better but I would say very low , first week maybe 2-3% at times but too I will lose a fish because of my own error , like having a 2 dollar fish terrorize a 22 dollar fish , I honestly try to order hardy fish , the only fish that i have been having a tough time with are Flame Angel's in one week I had ordered 3 one came i with one eye , so we kept him for our display and the other two didn't acclimate well. but that's the chance you take with livestock so I know it's not personal . last fall and winter they were great . good fish are good fish . bad fish are bad fish , oh and btw I don't take home paycheck yet so there must be something I like about thsi business

Turn off the lights and break out your stock of rubbermaid tubs. Set up your dips and don't worry about the customers thoughts. The good customers will appreciate that you are doing it properly and the others will get over or ask questions to learn why you are doing it that way. Once the fish have made their trip there is no reason worth delaying their acclimation to clean water.
