Race, Thanks for the positive comments/suggestions. Jaime, Lets put our differences aside and see what can be done to save the MAC or create something new.
Personally, I see the need for at least three things.
1) There needs to be an umbrella Marine Trade Organization. AMDA might be a part, but does not seek to represent the umbrella (at least that I can see).
2) There needs to be changes in the MAC (probably new leadership) that can allow the MAMTI Program to move forward.
3) There needs to be a move to ensure better quality marine fish and invertebrates. Part of this can come from mariculture (overseas and in the USA). Part should be net-caught fish.
I hope that there can be compromises reached that ensure better prices for the collectors and better quality marine organisms (that live to make profits through the chain) that are either farmed or harvested sustainably. This was the focus of the Sustainability Session that I helped organize and moderated at the MO04 Conference in Las Vegas. We need to build on these ideas to not only repair the trade's image but ensure that there is a continuing supply of marine organisms for an expanding trade and marine hobby.
Lets work together. It is not too late.
