I realize you think it's silly. I wasn't expecting agreement from you.

We all know there are plenty of other significant non point-source causes for reef degredation.

How can we, as reef hobbysist, minimize our impact on natural reef habitats?
This question supposes that we are having a negative impact.
Please point out our trades effects on the oceanic ecosystems of the Islands of Fiji.

of the Solomon islands:

the Vanuatu islands:

Tonga island chain:

the Marshalls:

The Hawaian islands:

Veitnam:

The Florida Keys:

Haiti:

Mexico:........?

You have always been against all fishing, claiming that it is non-sustainable, and now you say that you think it should be done sustainably.

I'm sorry but I don't remember ever mentioned fishing before Wayne. Besides, how could I be against sustainable fishing? The problem with any of these harvesting practices is that they are not sustainable in their current form. I don't understand how you could miss that point. Don't be shocked if I ignore future posts that I feel are missing my points completely.

You have said that you would like to see all ornamental fishing done away with.

I think I remember stating that was a pipe dream, a wild fantasy, and not a realistic expectation. The trade isn't going anywhere, I know that. That's just a manifestation of my frustration with the majority of people and practices that currently drive the trade, and the fact that nobody gives back, and that it's done in an unsustainable manner.

If consumers and businesses were responsible, and gave back to reef conservatioon, and if the trade was conducted more sustainably, then I would not be impulsively wishing it away...but i can understand how you misunderstood.

and Les Village could of course use more buyers.
They would ship to any bonafide importer independant of us.
Canadian impoprters would never buy all netcaught fish of course...so they won't be able to ship there.
Canadian dealers never do anything but talk...and whine liberal environmental platitudes whilst going along with the cyanide trade I relize... but some one in the States perhaps?
I wish a Canadian importer would actually help support the right thing, I really do... but they seem to have a policy against it while claiming to be green.

I'd do it if I was still in the biz, proud to say I always did my best to keep my sources clean. Look where that got me.

At one point there were 2, maybe 3 clean sources of net-caught fish in Vancouver alone. Now there are none. :(

Isolated efforts won't make any dent."?
Did you really say that?
That was truly indicative of your thought process wasn't it?
Mass, spontaneous, immediate behavioral change first...?
Has anything ever worked that way?
Did Jesus, Gandhi, MLK, mother Teresa wait for society as a whole to come on board before starting w/isolated efforts to make a dent?

All significant change begins w/ something smaller.
START WITH THE WISDOM THAT IF YOU FIX YOURSELF UP IN A SINGLE VILLAGE, AND SUCCEED, THE REST WILL FOLLOW.
So we are to call you when all the harder work is done then?
Gandhi

This is indicative of your thought process isn't it?

is that indicative of your thought process being you're in the same league (or even remotely near, for that matter) as jesus, mother theresa, and ghandi ?!!! 8O

talk about a holier than though complex-you truly do scare me sometimes

I've split this thread into an industry reform thread on our forum. I believe this ricardea thread has run its course. I tried to move as many of the salient points of the new discussion that morphed from the old. I tried to leave the negative stuff in here. Now I'll lock this thread. Feel free to remake any points you feel I missed in the new thread, but please keep it polite.
Thx-Jim
