The Europeans and public aquariums could also do a lot by supporting in real purchases what they say they believe.

The problem in Indonesia as you know is worse than in the Philippines. Direct imports of ornamental fish from Indonesia to the US during the last five years was over US5.4 million/year, a considerable percentaje of that is MO. We know that the values declared by exporters/importers to US customs are lower than the real ones. We also know that a great quantity of MO from Indonesia are getting to the US via Singapore, the value of ornamental fish from Singapore in the last five years is around US$ 8.4 million/year, once again this number could be 2-3 times.

Meaning that the number of fish coming to the US and sold is huge, and most of it is cyanide collected. We have been talking about the cyanide problem for over two decades, the industry knows about it since 1984 but has done nothing.

It is a shame that the efforts of fish collectors and groups such as the Villages Coop have not been appreciated by this industry. I haven't seen any CLEAR sign from this industry or overseas governments showing that things are going to change and that the cyanide issue one day is going to be part of the past. It won't happen, fish buyers in the North America will keep supporting this illegal trade.

What is needed are hundreds of aquarium hobbyists, retailers, importers and wholesalers..... all together loyal to coral reefs conservation.
