My son and I will visit Fiji in two weeks.
We plan to seek permission to visit Walt Smith's operation.
Is there any other recommendation you all my have?

Thank you

That is not quite the recommendation I had in mind.

My son, a bit of a radical enviromentalist, God Bless him, wanted to see first hand the improvements industry has made in aquaculture.
He wanted the opportunity to meet with and possibly dive with fishers who catch fish without the rampant use of cyanide typical of the Philippines and Indonesia.

Perhaps he should visit Indonesia first and swim with the rampant ones first.

It's kinda like that "purpose driven life " mantra, without the "PURPOSE" part.

Wayne,

One aspect you can find out is " The impact of the industry on social aspects of the communities involved".

Ed Lovell is one of the people to contact, no doubt that Walt Smith can tell you where to find him, or the phone book. I met Mr. Lovell during Marine Ornamentals' 99 he is a good source of information.

Have a good trip.

How radical is radical? You said your son is going to see advancements made in the industry, is he anti trade or is he on the fence and the verdicts still out. Just wondering.

Generally when i hear the term radical enviromentalist and aquarium trade mentioned together it never turns out well for the trade.

He couldn't be that radical if you all recall the threads he was mentioned in the past. He works or worked in a LFS and sold fish of questionable capture IIRC.

Some one else in this thread has a great story about "radical environmentalists" going to Fiji. Maybe he can let some of that loose  Probably not though :(
