Ricordea from Haiti

Coral colors shift all the time from various factors, including stress, regions, water parameters, lighting, changes in the environment, etc...the factors are endless as Bob probably knows. Color/species variation is very common in ricordea, so frankly I was assuming the question was just a vehicle for showcasing product. I agree that Bob shouldn't have any trouble selling them though.

Quite frankly it gets under my skin. The last thing that I want to see is this forum becoming an alternative advertising campaign for ANYBODY.

There are quite a few of us who could post topics like "Wierd nose on Black Tang" or whatever. We could post pictures and ask questions. All along the way we would be getting the word out that we were in the business and selling.

I sell enough to spend money when I wish to advertise. If I wanted to advertise on this site I would BUY a banner. Perhaps others should keep their pictures to themselves or BUY a banner on the site. Advertising, which is what he is doing, is NOT free on this site to the best of my knowledge.

Since no one bothered to respond to his first two questions, is it really that much of a stretch to believe he was trying to get an answer the third time?

If someone was trying to sell product, wouldn't they be more likely to try in a forum other than industry (read; competitor) types ?

Bob doesn't have any competitors on this site as far as this subject goes. I've never seen any DNR or Haiti exporters on this forum, let alone the web. Bob sells to many people in this forum (read:wholesalers).

I think the proper way to do it would be to solicite your satisfied customers and tell them to post the product they recieved. Then chiming in with a "Your welcome' or "we aim to please!" would be more appropriate. But I do see how this could sour alot other retailers/wholesalers that go out of there way to follow etiquette and proper business practices while respecting BB's user agreements.

I kinda agree with taco cat as well seeing how other attempts were made to no avail. It's just one of those things that you gotta deal with if you dont want to push the envelope though.

with out posting any photos .......... I am not one of the largest wholesalers I am THE largest Caribbean dealer. But I am still small compared to the big boys on 104 st Kind of like being the tallest pigmy in the tribe your still a runt....But really some times in the season orange is hard to come by. I get pc in that are rainbow like blue and orange like they are changing.
Is it temp of the water? light? shorter days? what? I am not that long on lighting info not my strong point. I do know something about it but just not like some people here.
So i am asking........... and clue as to why the color changes? any light combo that will bring out the orange in ricordea?
Oh and really I don't need any help selling the ricordea I just open the door and get out of the way of the walkin's

I spent years in Miami and the keys but went to the fish and skipped the aquarium route for my reef fix. I was in college and was a part-time divemaster for a local chain(force-E still in business?).

However there were a bunch of tanks and fish runs at the newfound harbor site on Big Pine that i had access to in the summer. Looking back though I wish I had been more aware of the reefkeeping industry during those years and the advances that were taking place.

Sry Bob, no real solid ideas for you on that though.

Regarding those ricordea pics.


I always thought you could only have or import ricordea with no rock or with a very small sized rock. Something like the size of a quarter.


Those in the picture look pretty big.

I see. I thought it was both ways in order to properly control it. I could import from Haiti.... then I can illegally collect large chunks from Florida and just say this were imported from Haiti? unless I get cought in the act of course...... Nothing never makes sense.

Sure you might, but if you have previously imported some, then you got paperwork. Paperwork wont describe rock size etc....

By the way. I know for example Florida has Statutes that are available in the Internet that we all have access to, however this statutes seem to be aimed toward the average person where it would be clear that you really cant collect this ricordeas and other inverts in large quantities etc...... but is there any documents available in the Internet that would have the rules or Statutes aimed towards the collector or importer. I have never come across one.

Unless you continually import from Haiti! then you would have fresh papers, meanwhile you could be doing the ole swap arooney and everyone would assume its legit. You could easily trick F&W. Importing is largely done on a honor system, our trade is full of less then honorable people. From what i understand, Florida collectors have told me that the orange do not exist in Haiti, only in the keys....I have seen orange in the keys myself, never been to Haiti so i cant speculate on whats there. I do know that many Florida collectors are drunk jack a$$es, and sometimes crackheads, so if they can poach orange, and there is a wholesaler willing to play the game then this is plausible. Assuming this behavior is true, i think its deplorable and it just goes to show how lazy and greedy some can be. You can collect orange on legal size substrate glue it down to aquacultured rocks and sell "legal" pieces, but no, thats too hard. I know Bob is big on Haiti, and i dont know if the constant buzz is to be directed at him. There are others that ship Haitian.

I would assume that different colors other then green and blue could come from Haiti. Its not that far from the keys and the only real difference would be seasonal water temp changes. Therefore, it is also possible that no swapping is occuring and everyone is playing by the rules.

Orange ricordea is available in Haiti. We get them at my work. However not as abundant of course.

OH Yeah!! I just to get them myself in Puerto Rico. Thats where Iam from. That was back like 15 years ago so I do not know how it all works there now.

There is a fair amount of different colors,including orange,coming into Canada from Cuba on a regular basis. They have started making designer colonies by epoxying frags of different colors onto a manmade base. Consequently we can receive an orange-blue-multicolor colony if we desire. They usually use 5-9 polyps/colony.
