I came across this site when researching about domestic culturing and artificial selection. (as apposed to Darwin's "natural selection" ).

Seems the stuff (Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)) actually has many uses
beyond catching the fancy of aquarium owners.

It is of interest that the red flourescent protein was discovered because a marine aquarist in Moscow kept a mini reef aquarium. Russian molecular biologists extracted and sequenced the protein. Corals have flourescing proteins of various colors (that become visible under blue light and other wavelengths). The web site cited gives good information. An excellent book, that gives the history and applications for flourescent proteins found in corals and other marine animals is titled "A Glow In The Dark" by Vincent Peribone and David F. Gruber published by Belknap Press of Harvard University Press in 2005. The cost is about $17.00. I highly recommend it.

Naesco, It does list some. A better source of this information is a 4 part series of articles writte by Dana Riddle (Feature Article Coral Coloration parts 1 to 4) that are downloadable from the Marine Aquarist"s Online Magazine.
