Note - it turns out that the event talked about below never happened and was never planned. It was a posting by an unknown person on Craigslist (now removed) and was simply untrue.

PS.
According to an international study released in 2006, all species of wild seafood are greatly depleted and predicted to collapse within 50 years. Within this ominous business environment, Wal-Mart sourced approximately $750 million in seafood in 2006, and the company's volume of seafood business is growing at roughly 25 percent a year.
"I am already having a hard time getting supply," said Peter Redmond, vice president for seafood and deli, and captain of the Wal-Mart seafood network. " If we add 250 stores a year, imagine how hard it will be in five years."
Redmond believes that continuity of supply is the greatest challenge for Wal-Mart's seafood network, and sees the Marine Stewardship Council's certification program for wild-caught fish as the best means for addressing this challenge.

The Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), established by Unilever and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in 1997, has defined standards for certification as a sustainable fishery, based on the United Nations' Code of Conduct for Responsible Fishing and on input from fishermen, retailers, government, nonprofits, and other stakeholders.
The MSC certifies third parties to audit and certify fishery and processor compliance throughout the supply chain, from "boat to plate."

Stunned and in slack jawed incredulity ...I thought this was a clever stunt and now relize it was serious. None of the text was edited by me...least of all where she says ....that Unilever and Walmart own the Marine Stewardship Council.....
I have no idea who the good guys are anymore....and need to go into a cave now and meditate on this.

People,
What do you think?
Was that a typo or was it proud boasting or what?
Its seems to be an amazing thing to say...or admit on a public invitation .
And with a government tie-in to boot! [Calif dept fish and game]
Still befuddled,
Steve

8O I wish that emoticon actually applied to how I feel about this

MSC, isn't that the one with a similiar logo to MAC?

Isn't the WWF a large funder of MAC?

monroe county sherrifs department in the Keys would do something similiar on July 4th. They would eat all of the fish and lobstertails and other things that they had confiscated over the year.

When I read the title of this thread I kinda chuckled and thought some Chilean Sea Bass and Swordfish might be on the menu.

Unilever Corporation who now in conjunction with WalMart owns the Marine Stewardship Council to make the world of Seafood a better place

That was the hilight of the thread....
Was it an over zealous press officer that wrote it...a Fruedian slip by a new infomation officer [ no doubt recruited on Craigslist] ....an oversight....or what?

Imagine if it said...Petco for example owns the Marine Aquarium Council to make the world of tropical fish a better place?

wanna make good use of poached seafood? send it to starving folk.

this whole thing makes me shake my head in disgust

Shark fin soup 8O You can bet the Reef Check Party group will be there. (You know the ones I'm talking about)That food should have been fed to the animals at Monterey Bay Aquarium.
What's next? Selling confiscated ivory to fund elephant conservation? Isn't what their doing sort of showing sympathy or understanding for the crime?

I just got off the phone with the MBA and they say they say there was no such event.
The only place I find any link to this event is a deleted post on craigslist.

This number:
Melissa Miller-Henson at the Resources Division of the Department of Fish and Game 916.654.2506

Does go to Melissa, but she was not at her desk.

Steve, where did you find this posting? Got a credible link?

Just got off the phone with Melissa. Apparently this was a spoof by unknown persons. Prolly someone unhappy with the current situation. There is no such event.

Guys, please check your sources before you post stuff. Please be especially careful about your sources before you jump to conclusions about people or organizations.

I have edited the title of this thread to reflect the reality of the situation.

The announcement of a dinner party celebration of the alliance between the Packard ,Unilever, Walmart, WWF and the Marine Stewardship council is not so far fetched it turns out!

Why just Google up their names and scroll thru dozens of pages.
I must confess....I did not know that the Unilever Corp and WWF actually created The Marine Stewardship Council...
That sounds like eco-conspiracy stuff, doesn't it?
Then in black and white I just read;

Unilever – a global consumer products company – largely paved the way for the current seafood choices movement when, in 1996, it partnered with WWF to establish the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

It appears that this became the template....or blueprint for other our own, lesser industry....What happened in the early days between WWF and Petsmart seems rather clear now.

No dinner party?
My gosh...the news is so much worse!
Steve

Meaning...given the researched and proven links of market manipulation provided in posted links above.....such a thing is not so far fetched it turns out!

The smaller issue here is that someone... upset at the powers that be on the ocean front .... posted a faux announcement in a public forum.

Naughty, naughty...but who knows why they did it? What was their interest or association with it?
Were they a disgruntled non funded ocean NGO? Good guy reformers? Ex employees? Who knows?

The larger issue that has evolved,,,at least for me is the public revelation of private corporations creating their own private NGOs to herd the public into their corral and manipulate them to choose their brand over their competitors.
The mis-use of certification as a private advertising tool to kill off competitors is disturbing when certain eco-groups sign on to annoint it as environmental and not just business routine.

Walmarts spokesman said there were not enough fish for their needs....."I am already having a hard time getting supply," said Peter Redmond, vice president for seafood and deli, and captain of the Wal-Mart seafood network. " If we add 250 stores a year, imagine how hard it will be in five years."
.....and that drove them to join in the fun.
What kind of environmentalist is it that agrees that that is the way to do it?
Did we not imagine the Marine Stewardship Council to be more in the public interest?
More of an independant NGO driven by environmental urges?
More of a good idea to make all the players, both large and small behave sustainably?

Since when did it become "the thing" to sell out to corporations rich enough to buy off conservationists ?
That was the underlying idea of the fake dinner posting.
The posting is gone....the message remains.
And its not a joke.

Maybe they posted it to show how gullible people were.

Using events that didn't happen as support for what groups may do seems like slander and demagoguery of the worst sort.
