Gresham, Good to meet you the MO Conference. Did you get to talk to Gil Adora (Assistant Director of Philippines Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources) or with Mr. Agus Dermawan Deputy Director of the Division of Small Islands and Marine Parks within the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries in Indonesia ?

I am encouraged by what they had to say at the NOAA sponsored Cyanide Detection Workshop (February 7 and 8th) in Orlando and from personal communication with them at MO08 (February 9-11th). There are changes coming that will benefit the coral reefs, the collectors/fishers, and the marine ornamentals trade.

Great News, Dr. Rubec.
Can you please give us a short run down of what are the proposed changes?

Thank you

I understand that coral cannot presently be exported.
Is anyone aware of coral farms in the Philippines.
Thank you

There's no coral farm here in PI. But we do have pearl farm in Davao and (newly established)freshwater fish farm in Laguna, Province.

Naesco,

The IMA took over management of a coral farm in 2001 situated in Barangay Coway on Orlango Island that was started by Dr. Thomas Heeger with funding from the German government. Since the export of corals was (and still is) illegal, the coral farm was used to support coral reef rehabilitation. Giant clams obtained from Dr. Ed Gomez were also held on the site. The corals planted on the site grew into a coral reef and many species of fishes returned. The IMA turned over management of the coral farm facilities to the community in 2004. The last I heard the giant clams were being sold in a seaside restaurant.

A coral farm established by Telapak in Bali, Indonesia has grown into a coral reef that has enhanced fish populations near the village of Les. The site is now a dive tourism destination. Fishes like green chromis, blennies, and gobies are captured within a mile of the Batari LeSatari export facility managed by the collectors' association.

More income can be generated to the collectors/fishers by exporting corals, live rock, and giant clams to the marine aquarium trade (Rubec et al. 2001, 2002). Since the organisms being cultured can be used to rear subsequent generations, the farms do not require continual harvesting from the wild. They can also be used to support reef restoration programs. In the case of the coral farm in Serangan (in Bali, Indonesia) 30% of the corals being cultured are being used to support coral reef restoration programs.

I am optimistic that the Philippine government will legalize the export of corals and other reef organisms reared on coral farms for the aquarium trade.

So what your saying is your own life is/was more important then that of the Cubans you said you'd help? You couldn't ask your wife for a couple hours to help a nation? Forgive me but how does having your wife with you stop you from meeting with some exporters for a couple hours so you could understand better how to help them?

Gresh you must be single.
My wife and I spent a whole day going to a remote village and distributing goodies that filled a hockey bag.
We simply did not have the time to go to the supplier in Havana. That is why I posted that the suppliers info is available to those who may be interested.

You didn't know that before hand? No wife on the PI trip? Honestly, I find it trying that you like to post about what you are going to do, and how that is different from others, but there doesn't seem to be much follow through.

Much follow thru makes it appear he's even made an attempt. I wouldn't give him even that credit at this point. Nothing worse then speaking down at people and all the while NOT walking the walk!!!!

What are you talking about Thales?
I took the time to locate the supplier but was not able to meet with him due to personal committments.
I took the time to offer his contact information on this board for anyone who would be interested.
I took the time to talk to the diving company about anchoring in coral areas, determined their needs and requested information on this board about contact information of an organization that might be interested in assisting them. No response.

Yeah, thats kind of what I was talking about. You made a big deal about the upcoming meeting, but no meeting. You are making a big deal about PI meetings, but you didn't actually do the last meeting...

I would guess because it really doesn't have anything to do with this forum or the people who frequent it. SCUBA sites would have more information. A simple google would give you the answers you are looking for. http://www.google.com/search?client=saf ... 8&oe=UTF-8

Thanks for the link Thales. I will follow through.
No big deal was made by me. I simply asked for contact information.
Here is the only answer I received from ONTFISH followed by my reply. (note italics)

""""Staying away from the political comments, I would like to awaken all of you "industry" movers and shakers that Cuba has been exporting marine fish and invertebrates for some time now. Their customers are Asia, Europe ,and yes, Canada. Over the past couple of years they have constructed and developed a modern holding and shipping facility, and are in the process of setting up another one in another part of the island. This is a joint Cuba-Spanish operation.

I doubt that they will show much interest in developing anything with Naesco, as they are well funded and have the contacts in Canada that they want. If he gets to meet them and see their operation,he will be pleased with their "eco-friendly"approach. There may be a possibility that they would sell to one of the British Columbia wholesalers, but the airline connections to there from Cuba aren't great.

All exports from Cuba would have to be for Canadian consumption only as the country of origin docs. must accompany any shipment into the USA---and Canada does not produce many Queen angels. I guess that they could go to Jamaica and have a Jamaican exporter produce paperwork-that is how much of the Cuban goods get into the USA, but that will not happen.

And finally, you should know that this thread will be well read (but not responded to) by the Cuban-Spanish exporter and much of his staff. They stay current with the posts on this and many other sites.

Good luck Naesco,as another Canadian and to show that we have sarcastic thoughts up here too, I am happy that Caterham is "southern by the grace of god"and that Jenn left Canada to go south.

Thanks for the current information ontfish.

I am really happy to see that the industry is thriving and doing well.

It was not my intention to set up an import business from Cuba for myself but facilitate and assist the industry in developing and industry.
As that has been accomplished no need for further input from me. If you would like to email me the name and address of the facility. I would like to visit same whilst in Cuba.

Yes I will be bringing boxes and boxes of stuff for the Cuban children donated by friends and business aquaintenance here.

Yes, the children suffer but not from their Government. They suffer as a result of the inhumane US embargo on Cuba.

Chris Stewart has asked me (by PM) whether I know that giant clams are threatened and endangered species under CITES?

Yes, I know that giant clams are threatened and endangered. Do I think it is good idea for Filipinos to eat them in a restaurant. No, I do not.

Would a program to culture them and export them to the aquarium trade bring in more income? Yes, it would.

Does the present ban on the export of giant clams make sense? Not really.

I believe that a program to culture giant clam and to rear them on lease sites makes sense. It should be tied both to a restoration program by planting clams onto reefs (in MPAs initially). But, the more colorful ones (say 20%) should be exported to the aquarium trade. This would provide income to the communities and create an economic incentive to protect giant clams and to conserve the coral reefs.

Someone should tell CBS, every time survivor is on a pacific island, you see them pulling up and eating huge tridacna clams. :P
