Joetbs, I'd like to know who here in Canada is importing Japanese corals, because I've not seen any.

You're on the wrong side of the country. Do a search on Aquarium Pros for Non-Indo Acans - you should find what you're looking for.

So you think the US has restrictions placed on Aussie and Japanesse corals? Not the case, sorry.

Okay so why do people have to come here for them? I know for a fact that my best source for AUS corals brings them in legally.

Because when no one else has CITES left Canada still seems to be able to bring in Aussie stuff ;) Begs the question "if no one has CITES left how does Canada get them?"

Japan is the one with the restriction, the question should be "how does Canada get around the Japanesse restrictions?" The US just abides by what Japan wants in this case.

Except when idiots smuggle them in their luggage or buy them from Canada.

Not sure what they do stateside or in other Canadian cities.
In Vancouver they always have dogs sniffing the luggage.
Try to bring in a wurst from Germany or Kolbassa from the Ukraine.
Impossible!

So then if an Australian or Japanese coral shipment is coming into Canada without CITES, then the exporters are just as much to blame. With the exporter being responsible for the CITES permits, then the product is not only being smuggled into Canada, but it is being smuggled out of those countries. Therefore, these countries also have porous borders.

Every country has porous boarders but many countries activelly seek to squash smuggling and others haven't seen so keen to publicize them or take the needed action. That was the premise of my original post which has been chased rabbitted to death.

Be honest, Gresham, you posted that Canada had a very porous border when it came to CITES and everyone else shot you down

I did say that, but can your keen eyesight run back over the thread and find WHERE I said no other country had porous boarders? And Canada does have very porous boarders for CITES items.

ok I bet this was the deal. He imported into the US with a permit. Then loaded up his truck and drove it over the border into Canada. That would make it a violation on both sides. Bet he beats some high taxes on imports ect.
