  1. Home Depot, Southdown, and Economics

I've seen that argument bounced around too. While I admit its a possibility, it just doesn't seem as likely. Like I said, though, I don't really know. Peter
  2. Home Depot, Southdown, and Economics

The agreement caribsea has is with AES which is in Ft. Pierce, FL. They are not supposed to sell it to anyone for aquarium use. AES brings the sand in from the bahamas and supplies both southdown and caribsea. The agreement is not with southdown. I suspect the "don't use in aquariums" warning...
  3. PREVENTING illness in fish

Leo, the life cycle of marine ich has been studied extensively. It doesn't stay dormant in tanks for years. It just isn't capable of this feat. I'm sorry, but this is just myth. Peter
  4. Tank/Captive/Cultured fungia?

I don't know of any commercial outlet selling them, but I do know someone who is actively proping them. If you go to the orlando reef club's message forum, post a message for "smpolyp" and ask him about them. I don't know if he'll part with them or not, but he has quite a few so it might be...
  5. New, mutant Black ocellaris clowns from ORA, t hey're cool!

I talked with ORA about these, and was told they'd go completely black (other than the stripes) when they got a little older. They were pretty cool, I got a look at some that were about 80% black at the Pets2002 dealer conference. Peter
  6. Powder Blue Tang Poll: Success or Failure

I wonder what the success rates would be for the captive reared ones. I suppose its probably too early to know if they would stand a better chance. If I were going to take a shot at a powder blue I'd sure go this route. (I'm not as I certainly don't have the proper tank for one now.) I believe...
  7. 24" or 27" depth and basic plan, opinions please

Are you going to run a DSB on this tank? For me, that would be the deciding factor on tank height. If so, I'd go 27" for sure. Peter
  8. What do you use for flow in your 10 gallons?

Mini and maxijets are great options. A HOB filter like an aquaclear (with the media removed) can be another great option on this type of tank. Its a great place to grow a little macroalgae or put a heater. Peter
  9. copper grounding probe

Copper is very toxic to invertebrates. I hope you haven't already put this in! Peter
  10. Use of central air conditioning water in reef system

My RODI just screws right on my sink. It takes a 6 year old to install. Peter
  11. drilling glass?

I have a standard drill with no press, and I've drilled a least two dozen tanks. The only tanks I have a problem with are 10g tanks because the glass is so thin. I crack about half of them. I've never cracked a tank with thicker glass. You do need the diamond hole saw though. Regular bits won't...
  12. How accurate are thermometers?

The little time and temp is also the brand I've got. I've checked this with a glass thermometer before, and they matched up very close. I'm glad you had good luck with them too Matt! I'll definately agree that second opinions are important. Even if most are accurate, you'll never know if...
  13. How accurate are thermometers?

Hey Matt, have you ever tested any of the cheap digital thermometers? I wonder how accurate these are compared with the glass ones. Peter
  14. Leathers getting too much light?

I pretty much agree with the above posts. I had my toadstool under a 400 watt halide and it did fantastic! The peeling was normal. It seemed to do this a LOT when I first got it, and rarely once it settled in. The only point I disagree on is current. My toadstool never really came fully out...
  15. 650G on grade slab is it OK

Thanks for the heads up on the laminated glass, I've never heard that before. I'll be sure to check that out before I order a tank. Peter
