  1. Inside overflow box floating - Help!

I built one of those overflows a year ago. I've found that a wedge between the base of the outer box and the outside wall of the tank tips the entire contraption a bit, so that the inner box is a bit lower in the water. This way, the inner box will have slightly more water than before. If...
  2. 24hrs. since gluing PVC but still smells...okay to use?

I've used PVC 24 hours after gluing w/o a problem. Actually, I've probably used it the same day. Most likely that the smell is from a compound that isn't water soluble (non-polar). Any that is in the tank should quickly be partitioned into your skimmate (if you have a protein skimmer). If...
  3. Which clown (clarkii vs. ocellari)?

Well, my last clown died a couple of days ago . Had a pair of ocellari, which adopted the overflow box in my tank. This led to frequent trips through the plumbing, and, eventually, to their demise. I'd like to try again, but I'd hate to have another pair go through the same thing. I...
  4. Last minute advice?

I'm about to put a DSB into my 20gal reef - has been a CC/aragonite mixed bed until now. I'm going to do this because I'm fed up battling algae on the bed, which I suspect is due to trapped detritus. I'll be using fine silica sand (sugar sized) - best I can find around here, no Southdown...
  5. Last minute advice?

Thanks guys. Any reason not to dump the CC into my sump (it has a 4-5" DSB)? Since I don't feed my sump, I'd think the detritus wouldn't be a problem there. Or would enough food/waste make it from the tank to still cause problems? If the result is microalgae in the sump rather than the tank...
  6. Aiptasia help !!!!!

I tried the bergia and the peppermints. Bergia Pros: look cool, eat only aiptasia, effective Cons: not hardy, noctural (mitigates the "look cool" factor), need several (I'd say 3-4+ for your tank) Pepps Pros: effective, hardy, cheap Cons: can/will eat other things besides aiptasia I have...
  7. Air pump rec's for DIY protein skimmer

Thanks for the reply! Does that pump have an adjustable flow? The info on the website didn't seem to indicate that.
  8. Air pump rec's for DIY protein skimmer

Looking for an air pump for my DIY skimmer. The skimmer is using a ceramic airstone and has a 3 ft. water column (the airstone is at the bottom of the skimmer, in case that wasn't obvious ). I've been operating it using scrubbed compressed air (the tank is set up in a lab), but would like to...
  9. I WILL buils a functional overflow by this weekend!

I followed the design in the DIY section: http://www.reefs.org/diy/index.html Uses a 90 degree PVC elbow, works great. No gurgles.
  10. Herbivore Food Recommendations

Added a bicolor blenny to my tank last week, and I'm getting a bit nervous that he's not eating much. He picks halfheartedly at the coralline and the macroalgae, but I have no hair algae for him. I've been offering nori, but he ignores it. Figure I'll head to the LFS for some spirulina flakes...
  11. eyelash blenny -anyone know anything about these?

Sorry to jump on, but this is kinda related: Just added a bicolor blenny to my tank. I've got plenty of macros right now, but would like to train him to eat something store-bought. I've got a package of nori, I'll try him on this first. What's the best way to feed with nori? Crumbled, like...
  12. Red Turf Algae Control

Yup, I've got it too. I'm using RO/DI water and a protein skimmer. It appeared about 4 months after I set up the tank, and it is spreading, although slowly. I've got a medium sized patch, and 2 small ones on the opposite side of the tank. My tank is 20 gal, so my options are limited for...
