  1. New Exhibit at the Waikiki Aquarium

Awesome exhibit. Awesome place. I've only been reefing for about a year, but things like the Waikiki Aquarium are making me seriously consider changing my major from Digital Arts to Biology. BTW, concerning Digital Arts and your website... I've created virtual tours. I'll do yours for half of...
  2. Fish recommendations

I'm planning a new 80 gallon, but I'm a newbie and don't really know what kind of fish I want to keep. I like the look of the small colorful reef fish, but then again I've always wanted something aggressive that eats live food. Are there any animals that I can plan on keeping in the reef...
  3. Cheap vs. Expensive Ballasts

Hey everybody. Is there a big difference between an Icecap VHO ballast and a cheaper Advance ballast, like the REL2S110? I was reading about using NO bulbs in VHO ballasts, and wondered if the Advance ballast would be able to do the same things for NO that the Icecaps do. Thanks.
  4. cheap lighting solutions?

The accepted useful lives of NO bulbs that tyoberg mentions have traditionally been established by magnetic ballasts. Newer technology (better ballast) is changing that. Just as the sulfer bulb will eventually change the way we all light our tanks. Your animals don't care at all how you get the...
  5. Are you a redneck reefer ?

You might be a redneck reefer if... You named your turbo snail Earnhardt and your lawnmower blennie Deere. Your tank fell through the floor of the trailer when you filled it with water. When it fell, it landed on your peacock. You scraped off the "weed" growing on the glass with a buck...
  6. Lighting Ideas

I will have an 80, about 72"x16"x18". I can afford 2x96w PC DIY, ballast and everything for $100 (btw, does anybody have any opinions on the cheaper Advance ballast, #REL2S110). I know I won't be able to keep SPS or anything, but I don't plan on anything but fish, LR, LS, and inverts anyway. I...
  7. Parabolic Reflector

Would a parabolic trough reflector be better than a "McDonald Arch reflector?" It seems like the parabolic would not send as much light back at the bulb and also keep it perpendicular to the water's surface. I guess this should be made of something shiny that reflects light vectors back...
  8. Lighting Ideas

I'm setting up an aquarium for the first time, on a very tight budget (college student). Lighting is too expensive. Is there anything that could be used to filter sunlight to mimic the natural water filter many feet below the ocean's surface? I know it would take some mirrors, a huge window, and...
