  1. bio balls.. yes or no ???

balls require maintenance, as they need to be washed once in a while (25% of them monthly would do it). If you keep up with this maintenance they are a great bio-filter – most don’t realize this and give bio-ball a bad reputation. Its not the balls themselves that are problematic, it’s the...
  2. how to kill off grape calurpa????

Chris - I am curious, why are you dismissing nitrates and inserting phosphates? I read your post and immediately agreed with you that phosphates are an equal contributor. But lets face it, if the effect is removed than the cause will surface – and its more than likely going to be nitrates or...
  3. tank turnover

wow, looks like we are all a tad different when it comes to GPH -- so with that said, it all works :-) I run a danner 3600 on my 180 - after my head pressure I netting about 2500 gph or about 14x/hour. I personally prefer the greater flow rate. I think a large factor to consider is noise...
  4. RO/DI Question

Hi Robbie - I recently bought a Coralife ro/di and actually read the directions ( figured for $200 bucks I should make sure I don't screw it up) after running it without the DI and the other filter (name escapes me) then I added them and ran it again for like 20 gallons and she was all set to...
  5. how to kill off grape calurpa????

Jaime - your tank levels are not what you think, the calurpa is eating them so quickly that your tests can not detect them. Anyway, if you put a tang in your tank the algae will be gone in a day – but your nitrates will sky rocket since the algae is not there to handle it. You may need to look...
  6. Fungia Plate coral placement

Put it where you please - it can and will move if he doesn't like the location. I have a green plate that I placed rather high on my reef and within a week he was on the sand. Just be careful not to place it near other corals as he will sting them -- also, keep in mind that he will puff...
  7. How Much Bionic?

I could be wrong, but I don't think you can over dose Bionic - I think it precips out if you do. Back in the day I was dosing 50ml on 200 gallons but my calcium demands were not that high. I loved this product, kept the calcium pegged at 450 or so -- just a pain in the rear to dose so darn often.
  8. corals in fowlr

hmm -- what are NO flourescents? Water quality is always an issue. if you consider going with VHO flourescents, running actinics and 50/50's you can pretty much have any corals you desire.
  9. mushrooms are releasing from rocks!

Its normal and not a sign of issue - mushrooms split when they multiply, fun to watch actually point it out to children if you have any (takes a while to divide) then quite often you will find one of them releases and settles elsewhere. Its (IMO) a sign of a healthy tank
  10. Uh oh!!!

Hey Man did the bulb smash or just no longer work? If it smashed open (which I highly doubt) - the worst of it is going to be picking out the glass. I know people that smashed them and spent hours plucking out the glass (6 foot VHO's !) no adverse reactions to the tank. The gasses are...
  11. Darn it all, but ain't he photogenic?

Great shot ! What kind of camera you shooting with there? You have dropped some excellant pics on this site - incredible zoom capabilities.
  12. Phosphate Reactors

OK, I looked it up - I personally don't like it. The instructions state "use it until your phosphates begin to increase" personally I don't want to use a phosphate absorber that’s going to have the ability to release back into my system. Look into Rowaphos and do a comparison. I run this...
  13. coral problem

Pulsing xenia are sensitive to swings in PH and alkalinity – are you positive its been nibbled on or could it be that the heads are drawn inward?
  14. Phosphate Reactors

I am not familiar with GFH Media, but the phosban reactor is a great all purpose canister to use. It's cheap and effective. If the media is too granular you will need to use a bag and fill in any open spaces with filter floss. Brighten up your SPS? I'll need to go google GFH and see what you...
  15. what is this?

The first picture looks like Xenia covered in hair algea -- not a lot of help am I? :P Does it retract when you touch it? respond to light?
