how often do you clean the sump?

hello all, i have a 45 gallon reef tank with an 18 gallon tall sump.question:do i put live rock or sand in the sump or leave it empty?i currently have 80 lbs of live rock in the main tank and about 2 inches of live sand.what do you all think?thanks for your help :D
