  1. I was wondering what the best filter would be for a 50 gal

I've got a 50g with internal overflow, and all the filtration occurs in the 30g sump. My advise: read up and keep it simple I'm running: 3x96 watt pc (I'm only doing soft corals, but thinking about adding a MH) A skimmer plumbed into the sump(get a proven one) A reverse lit fuge (lit by a 26...
  2. Live rock in tank or sump?

Both, when I get a sweet rock with corals on it another one goes in the sump to make room.
  3. $$$

I agree get all the LR and substrate at once (and get nice stuff its worth it). But as far as hardware you can run systems that are much more simple than what alot of us have. I saw an incredible ~40g corner on the counter at Fishworld in Raleigh this weekend. They had a small maxijet, HOT...
  4. $$$

Buy Used stuff. Check the for sale forum on sites like this. And do it a little bit at a time. HTH Gabe
  5. Type of rock to get...Kaileni or Aquacultured TBS rock?

The TBS rocks are pretty much round chunks and that makes them harder to aquascape. I'm getting rid of all mine when I move next week. Too bad you don't live closer. In my experience setting up my tank last year the rock that was shipped, even overnight DHL, had to re-cycle. But the rock I...
  6. Supergiantrobot's 90 G tank setup

SGR: I'm running a hood that wraps around the tank but doesn't have a top. Super simple to build; mine is 1x6 pine that I stained and poly'ed. I've attached a picture that describes the basic design. You could also add a 2nd lip that holds a glass cover below the top of the hood and the...
  7. Unorganized

What about your cleaning and water change schedule? I was lax for a while this summer and the tank looked great, now I'm starting to pay for it. Nasties build up over time. I got a 5 stage 75 GPD RO/DI unit from ebay about a year ago... I just checked and its Aqua Safe Systems ::this is...
  8. Zoo Med

I had one on a freshwater tank for 3 years w/o problems, but salt is a totally different environment. Clean it often and good luck :D
  9. How hard is an overflow

I have a CPR Acrylic overflow, works well, keeps siphon when the power goes out, but its not a great solution. 80 -120 $$ its only 30/per hole at the LFS here + overflow kit. I would get it drilled; get it drilled. The First time you come home to an empty sump, fried pump, and ruined floor...
  10. Sump return failed - New sump time? Help

I used a screw together union on the upstream side of the pump about 6 inches higher than the pvc U that feeds from the sump to the pump. When starting the pump for the first time I used a funnel and added water so I wouldn't dry start the pump. When the power goes out it only drains to the...
  11. What would you do differently.

Interesting thought... but addition of vital minerals to RO/DI water through "RO right" or another similar product is recommended for a Planted Freshwater tank, isn't it? Other problems I forsee are: - Addition of waste, Co2, and iron to the Reef; the point of going RO/DI is for super clean...
  12. What would you do differently.

so I'm just asking for opinions, that doesn't mean I'm gunna listen to them any more than I listen to the LFS who says yea sure, this mature tang will go fine in you 30gallon. BUT there are alot of very experienced folks that frequent this forum, I figure there might be some brilliance out...
  13. Sandsifting stars...Good or bad?

I used to have pods.... lots of them. But then I got a sand sifting star... looked so cool, kept the sand mixed up; but now I have no pods. I do still have spagetti and flat worms... he didn't eat them for some reason. Never had a problem with nassarius snails, but the star and peppermint...
  14. What would you do differently.

I'm moving in mid-late October and will have the chance to re-set up my entire system... sounds like fun, and ALOT of work. Right now I've got PC lighting and softies mainly. Here are the details of what I've got running: http://reefs.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t ... highlight= Except the...
