  1. Inland Reef / Reefs.org Salt Analysis Project

I just donated $10. I'd like to see the Fritz salt tested: http://www.fritzpet.com/pro_salts_main.html Thanks for doing this. Much needed. John
  2. AquaC Urchin Pro or Euroreef ES5-2?

I have the Urchin Pro for my 90g and am very, very pleased with it. Make sure you get the Mag3 pump and NOT the Rio 1400. According to AquaC, you get 20% better performance with the Mag3. I think the improvement is even great. Also, you won't have to worry about the Rio. :) John
  3. Is Rubbermaid bad for RO storage???

The roughneck is not food grade. A rubbermaid brute (except for the red colored) is food grade. My understanding is that if food grade, then no leaching. You can get it online (as well as other possible water containers) at www.usplastics.com. I doubt the slime is at all related to something...
  4. For all those with garbage can extra water holders

Roughnecks are not food grade. Brutes are (except the red one). See www.usplastics.com. John
  5. Scraping Acrylic front... does it leave scratches?

There are scrapers designed for acrylic. Kent makes some They can still scratch though (e.g., a piece of stand gets stuck between the blade and the acrylic). Scratching is always a risk with acrylic and I'll strongly consider that for my next tank but still think I'd get another acrylic tank. John
  6. Lids?

Agreed. Yet another of the reasons I fired the guy who initially set up my tank. Definitely on the list of tank projects (right after the sea swirl install!). Any suggestions on how high off the water? I'm thinking about 8" -- I've read that the MH can damage the acrylic. John
  7. Lids?

Thank you. I'm going to give it a try. John
  8. Lids?

Newbie question: I have a 90g acrylic tank with the two holes in the top. The guy I hired to set it up (long since let go) told me to keep the lids on. However, from the weeks I've been reading here, I'm inferring that most everyone leaves their lids off for light purposes. I have two x 175w...
  9. New Pump, Chiller on a lot more

Thanks, I do think that more heat is being added to my cabinet and I need to ventilate that better. I also agree that the AS is much more powerful and perhaps generates much more heat as a result. One thought I've had is that the water movement is so much faster compared to the QO that the...
  10. RE-Cycle? Lost Maxima

I got the ammonia before the clam died. Nothing has died that I'm aware of (perhaps some member of my clean-up crew maybe but no fish or corals) but I was feeding more than usual due to a new fish that was getting beat up a bit (I was told to feed more in this case to make everyone else happy...
  11. RE-Cycle? Lost Maxima

    Toast as in gone. :)
  12. RE-Cycle? Lost Maxima

I'll test for phosphates -- what is an acceptable range and what should I do if it's too high? There is about 90lbs of LR in now. I took out about 30 lbs and it's toast. John
  13. RE-Cycle? Lost Maxima

Yeah, I don't believe lack of water movement is the whole problem. I really think the problem is that my tank has re-cycled due to all the change. Does that make sense? I was having problems before the clam died so I guess they're going to get worse :( Fortunately, everything else in the...
  14. RE-Cycle? Lost Maxima

Knew there was going to be info I forgot! Live Sand. Aqua C Urchin Pro Protein Skimmer in Ecosystem Sump. Skimmer is in last chamber of sump before return and sump has miracle mud and caluerpa in 2nd chamber. John
  15. RE-Cycle? Lost Maxima

A few weeks ago, my maxima clam became very unhappy. About this same time, I started getting a lot of that slimy maroon algae growth over my LR (is that cyano?). Tested the water and it wasn't good: Nitrate is 40 ppm, Nitrite is .15ppm, Ammonia is 35ppm, PH is 8.6, temp is 78, CA is 400, Mg is...
