  1. Stirring up the DSB...

I can't remember how many lbs but it's a 30gal tank (long) & the sand is approx. 4" deep. Perhaps it would be best for me to fully remove the sand during this process (unfortunately I can't take the tank out from underneath the stand with the tank on top).
  2. Stirring up the DSB...

Hello, I need to make adjustments to my fuge which will require that I move half of the sand from one side to the other. This will probably release some anaerobic pockets which could make their way to the main 135 gal. tank, causing issues... I'm looking for the best way to handle this sand...
  3. Carpet anemone not eating...

Thanks for the additional tips. I'll give it a shot. Sometimes the anemone looks good (even the mouth is somewhat closed looking) and other times it looks horrible. Yesterday I was watching it closely as it was expanded pretty well and noticed it expelling a barely cloudy substance from it's...
  4. Carpet anemone not eating...

Thanks for the tips, I appreciate it. I've continued to try to feed it fresh fish & silversides soaked in Zoecon each day but haven't had any luck yet. I must admit that I was starting to think that it was surviving solely on zooxanthalae and maybe phytoplankton because it had continued to...
  5. Carpet anemone not eating...

Update: Well, not alot new to say but I have some pics... I've tried to feed it silversides & fresh fish from the grocery store, both with & without a drop of garlic to try to make it more enticing but it won't take them. The anemone is a lot smaller than when I first brought it home but the...
  6. Carpet anemone not eating...

Where do you find fish like that? Is that a supermarket item at the fresh fish area or do you get that from an LFS as a frozen pack? Thanks again, Mark
  7. Carpet anemone not eating...

Hi, My carpet anemone (not sure if it's S. Haddoni or S. Gigantea) has not eaten anything for at least 2 weeks. It's still very sticky and will briefly grab onto thawed shrimp that I put on it but it doesn't curl up to eat the shrimp & doesn't maintain it's grip, allowing the clown to pull it...
  8. 10k MH bulb turned yellow

I'm quite sure the bulb was CoralVue. I will swap the bulbs today when I get home to see if the problem is with the ballast or the bulb. Thanks!
  9. 10k MH bulb turned yellow

I bought 2 400W HQI pendants, ballasts & bulbs about a month ago. I noticed just yesterday that one of the two bulbs is putting out a very yellow color & not the bright white that it used to. (looks kind of like when the bulbs are warming up for the first 10 minutes but remains that way). Is...
  10. Calcium Reactors: (seeking advice)

Hello everyone, I'm sick of using A/B solutions for my 135g and am looking to bite the financial bullet & get a calc reactor. I'm a DIY kind of person so I wouldn't mind building one... There are a few DIY plans out there that look pretty good but are there features that the more expensive...
  11. Question for Physics experts regarding Siphons

This is for a DIY chiller, I just listed 'sump' to make the story easier :) Here's a diagram I used over on a seahorse forum: Basically, I have a 2.5 cu. ft dorm fridge that will be in a closet behind the nano. Water will drain down to the fridge and then get pumped back up with a small...
  12. Question for Physics experts regarding Siphons

That is a very good question. I've been trying to reach JBJ on the phone but nobody seems to answer their extension. I need to find out whether or not the back glass is tempered. I need to try to find a diamond glass hole saw bit. Last time I was using a glass drill bit and was quite...
  13. Question for Physics experts regarding Siphons

it's glass. I think you're right, the best (safest) solution will be the drill. Now let's see if I can drill it without shattering it like I did my 30g tank 8O 8O 8O
  14. Question for Physics experts regarding Siphons

Hola, I'm trying to figure out if there is any way to get a broken siphon to automatically restart when power comes back on to the return pump. Is there any way to make the following work or do I HAVE to drill? Thanks for any input. I'd rather not drill the back of my nano :? Mark
  15. Fire prevention:

Thanks for your informative responses. I'm not saavy in heat conductivity, but it appears that each of you recommend placing a heat conductor (metal) in between the pendant & wood instead of an insulator (glass, fiberglass, or maybe part of a cloth oven heat pad etc...). Knucklehead, does that...
