  1. is Gonapora a flower pot?

My tank suffers from nearly terminal neglect but the goniopora I bought about 4 years ago is still with me. Ive said this before but I'll repeat it because if you are like me you won't do a search for it. I have a non-branching, long tentacled, green goni. IME it needs just enought flow to...
  2. Are my bulbs too old?

oh yeah, my URI bulbs started to turn black near the end somewhere around a year old. You couldn't tell any real color change (other than the initial, new-bulb, change) for close to two years.
  3. Are my bulbs too old?

My VHOs (on an Ice cap 660) are pushing three years old. The color ihas noticably shifted, but still looks ok and the corals still live. I've recently had some algae problems and I suspect its time to change them. IMO the people that say you HAVE to replace your lights every X months are the...
  4. New Montipora bleaching. What can I do?

I'm with monkeyboy. I just don't see bleaching happen this fast. Infection and subsequent tissue loss is a whole different story. Unfortunately the two terms began to be called bleaching interchangably. I've got $10 that its an infection (kiss it goodbye).
  5. BLACKLIGHTS not good?

I'm not convinced that pigments are a function of protection from UV. This may be a side effect of pigmentation but not its purpose. IME dim tanks produce brighter "flourescent" colors and bright light causes "the brownness". Too many people try to find a reason for everything in nature the...
  6. Lights won't stay on with Icecap 660

This has happened to me recently. My waterproof endcaps were brittle from UV exposure and moisture permeated them and caused them to short (I assume). The lights barely flickered then wouldn't come on. New endcaps solved the problem. I'm still a little torqued that the endcaps got brittle...
  7. Goniopora Base Expansion

This is just a normal activity. They do this with the tentacles extended also. How long have you had your Goni?
  8. Marineland announces new bacteria discovery??

What will happen to these refrigerated bacteria in a +80 degree tank?
  9. Dyed Goniopora ?

Have YOU ever had a goniopora die, Reef Fever? DamnHippo, was the encrusting goni the same color as your solitary one? My goni tends to spit off individual polyps. So far none have survived to encrust onto something, however I think it is possible. My big green one is (was) not a solitary...
  10. how to catch a coral banded shrimp

just grab it in your hand. They aren't fast and can't hurt you.
  11. Dyed Goniopora ?

I've had my big round green goni for close to three years. I do nothing special. I don't EVER do water changes. Two year old VHO's. Top off bout once a week. No additves or Kalk (once under a blue moon). IME the Goni is super hardy despite what many people have said. Mine likes to eat. I...
  12. Bisma Rock shrimps?

I don't know what I do. It may be what I don't do (maintainance). I really can't kill these things.
  13. does anyone run a plenum?

There is no difference in most cases between a DSB and a plenum system. Don't waste your time installing a plenum. It doesn't hurt but it doesn't help either. Simplicity is key.
  14. Bisma Rock shrimps?

No. About what? I don't do anything right but this supposedly hard to keep stuff is really easy and indestructable for me. I think most of the hype about things like goniopora and "bismac" rock being hard to keep is still old-school misconceptions from when most people couldn't keep anything...
  15. Bisma Rock shrimps?

I've seen these before. I waw them in a dead coral skeleton. I thought that they were shrimp too; its neat that they are hermit crabs. I have a "Bismac Rock" and I would say that it is one of the hardiest corals I have owned. It may be the type of coral (these worms inhabit several different...
