  1. DIY calcium reactor. Single pass or recirculating?

I use homebrew single pass system with no sump, and no dedicated pump. Almost a total passive system The system gets water from the tank from one port of a PVC manifold that is the main circulation for the tank. From the port it goes to a penplax air valve for water flow control. Then down to...
  2. Pump Question Please

If there is no sump in the basement and it is a true closed loop then the only head you have in the system is the piping and the valve. If at all possible I would switch to 3/4" on the valve and the final return line. The only other choice is to find a proper sized pressure rated pump and even...
  3. High Alkalinity

Yeah I have Saliferts Alk and CA kits, but most of the time I use Tetras KH test, faster quicker cheaper, and matches the Saliferts almost dead on target. And I agree, I am yet to see a decent CA test that my color deficiant eyes can read but Salifert has been to closest to giving repeatable...
  4. High Alkalinity

Chns0289, I am curious how you can read a DKH of 20 with the Salifert kit. If I remember right the scale stops at 16. For those of you who use the Salifert Alk Kits, When you draw the liquid into the syringe watch closely how much chemical is really being pulled in. If the plastic tip leaks...
  5. Setting up a Micro Tank?

  6. beware of dyed corals

Yeah, seen flower pots bright yellow, and over 6 colors of colts, kinda sad. Just guessing but wouldnt the dye block the light to the zoolanth and cause an early death? Ph
  7. Refugium

The ideal way is to get the 10 or 5 gallon drilled, install a bulkhead fitting, set it above the main tank by just a bit and let it gravity return to the main tank. You then use a small power head to push the water back up to the refugium. He is a nice picture showing this, not mine but very...
  8. MRS. Smiths Pickling lime

No pic, but is a can about 7" tall and 3" around. Found mine in the baking section. HTH Ph
  9. Alkylinity

Jeff, Do your Corals look ok? If so then get a second test of the water with a different kit before you do anything. There are times when you get Ionic imballance in the water and the best way to fix is with a water change. Usually a sign of a ballance problem is when you add buffer, does your...
  10. Hydrogen Sulfide Question

Thanks Randy, new CC it is. Ph
  11. Alkylinity

Get a second test kit for referance. I can't ever see a reading of zero happening unless you were testing pure RO/DI water and even then you probably would read higher than zero. If you can get a hold of a Salifert Alk test or a Tetra DKH test I would use those for a reliable check. HTH Ph
  12. Hydrogen Sulfide Question

I had taken my CA reactor down for a bit when I went sumpless. I have been thinking of ways to reinstall the CA reactor and think I have it figured out now. During the time the CA unit was down I goofed and didn't clean it. Now the media has the ever so pleasent smell of rotten eggs. I tried...
  13. Pics of my tank

I have found with a digital camera you don't take alot of pics unless you are a major stock holder with Duracell... Or you buy a power supply for around the house! Here are few pics I took this weekend. Tell me what ya think. http://www.pbase.com/ph/reef [ February 03, 2002: Message edited...
  14. Coralline Algae

I have some Green in my tank. The green seems to like the higher light levels, the purples like the shade spots. Ph
  15. How Deep? DSB

I have a 100 gallon with a small bioload and 3 1/2" of fine sand. On low range test nitrates=0 after one year with no water change. I also harvest macro out of the tank. Works for me, your milage may vary. HTH PH
