i too use a sump with just a skimmer. i also have a refugium with a deep sand bed there and in my tank.......... but i see nothing wrong with using a wet/dry filter on a fish only system...... if you have a fish only, with the nice white decorations. then you need some way to develop beneficial...

i have had a maze brain for like 4 years. have never spot fed it........ it gets pretty long sweepers. i have it next to another closed brain.... had it near as long.... they have never hurt each other and i have experienced good growth.

you will get different algae outbreaks in the beginning..... i dont like hermits. they kill snails... buy 10 or so snails maybe more....... some mini brittle stars. Also current can help keep algae from attaching to surfaces/............... what kind of current do you have?

you will always have to clean the algaes off the glass. i believe ime that all tanks get a skight brownish algae on the glass.........get alot more snails also though to help out... and a magnet cleaner!
