  1. MAJOR POWER OUTAGE HITS NY, TORONTO, CLEVELAND, OTTAWA, ETC

I'm on LI and was down for over 24 hrs. Got stuck late at work and had to be in early the next day. Didn't have much time to address the problems in the reef. Lost 1 flame angel. Everything else looks fine. My outdoor koi pond fared far worse. Between the 90 heat, reduced O2 levels and zero...
  2. Help catching baby clowns

Congradulations. If you are serious about raising the fry then getting one of the books on the topic is a must. You will have very limited to no success without this resource. When my skunk clowns were spawning I placed a flat rock right next to their anemone. They quicky began using this...
  3. Chitons in DSB?

Hello all, Just wondering if anyone else has chitons in their sand beds. I have seen at least four against the glass up two three inches below the surface of the sand. Seem to be doing a good job of moving the sand around as they travel. Had the opportunity to see one coming out of the sand...
  4. Inside overflow box floating - Help!

Gate, Can you post a pic or a drawing of the overflow. Can't seem to see what the problem is without a visual. Steve
  5. Board Offline

Hi James, Sure it's a little annoying but you know it takes about 1 sec to hit refresh or at worst 2 seconds if I have to hit it twice. I don't mind. Pages and pics load very fast and the content is second to none. Keep up the great work. Thanks, Steve
  6. All VHO users must read this

Okay, heres a dumb question. Do VHO and NO bulbs use the same endcaps or would I need to use different sockets for the different type bulbs. TIA Steve
  7. Hair Algae

I would try doing some water changes with RO/DI. Then use RO/DI exclusively for top off and future changes. This is a must for a reef tank maintanance. Steve
  8. What you think newbies should know

I recommend getting the reef books first and reading them cover to cover before you even think about buying anything else or posting well documented questions over and over. Then if you think you still want a reef, save up a few grand and have fun. Steve
  9. Galaxia coral hearty?

I got a great tennis ball size peice from Dr. Mac. $12.00 on his special page. I believe they are propagating them. I broke off a small frag and it is growing nicely already. Good luck, Steve
  10. Live Rock

Yes 2 weeks in the 10 gal. should do it. If it is a short trip to the lfs it could be less time. If you test the water you can be sure when it is fully cured Steve
  11. Live Rock

Well, how small are we talking. I would think a 5lb well cure peice of rock may not pose much of a problem. But - If there is any significant dieoff on the rock even a small peice could eaisily over burden a new system and cause a nutrient spike. I would recommend that you cure any new rock...
  12. CUCS SUCK

Sorry to hear about your loss, I had a brown cuke get sucked into a PH once but it had no ill effects on the tank at all. The cuke was pretty mangled but to top it off he survived. Don't know if some cucs are more toxic than others. More colorful might be more so, as bright colors in many...
  13. coralline algae

Hippo, In order to get a good variety of coraline algaes to grow you need to introduce those algaes into tank. This is achieved by adding LR with different speices of algae growing on them. Many forms take a while become established in the tank and their rate of growth and success also depends...
  14. cruel green water

An algae bloom can occur on a new set up or when major changes are made, such as adding live rock to the tank, etc. What are your params for amonia and nitritates/nitrites. Also post your SG, temp and lighting. What else is in the tank? How much Live Rock, live sand etc. Increase your...
