  1. Fighting cyano and diatoms

That is true, I thought you were referencing planted macro algae like caluerpa or something. I thought about it, but I heard there is a great chance that either my tangs would eat it all, or it would take hold and swarm the tank. Two very different outcomes, neither very promising. I do have...
  2. Fighting cyano and diatoms

I don't currently have any plants planted in my tank, and I don't have a sump or refugium, nor do I have any plans of installing. I'm hoping that once the new lights go on this will balance out. I'm also going to start testing my alk and calcium, to ensure of their levels. My tank is based on...
  3. Fighting cyano and diatoms

I tested for phosphates, and they were 0 as well as nitrates and ammonia, and my tank isn't new either, it's been running since last november. I'm not saying it's super established, but not considered newly cycled either. That's why the algae has me baffled.
  4. Fighting cyano and diatoms

Thanks again, I really hope that's the problem. I've read a lot of articles, and the symptoms in my tank go hand in hand with poor lighting. I'll let you know when they come in.
  5. Fighting cyano and diatoms

I've read that article, it really helped, my diatoms are actually concentrated in my sand bed. It starts out as tan colred spots of sand, then brown clumps, and then it will start to get covered in cyano, it's a bit of a mess, and I'm really hoping its the lights. Based on my water tests, I...
  6. Fighting cyano and diatoms

My tank has started going downhill in the past few months with patches of cyano(in high current areas BTW) and diatoms in my dsb. So I started getting together some test kits. Here's what I get Ammonia - 0 Nitrites - 0 Nitrates - 0 Phosphate - 0 to .1ppm Silica - 1ppm I've been buying RO water...
  7. Conch ID??

I was at my lfs and they had small fighting conch 3 for $15, and then I spotted these snails in with the mexican turbos 3 for $9. They look very similar to fighting conch's, but could anyone id them for me? In the last picture, the shell in the background is not what I bought, it's the shell...
  8. Overfeeding?

    Awesome, will do, thank you!
  9. Overfeeding?

I've got them currently almost on the bottom, I've read they aren't a species that needs alot of light, so I figured 12 inches down, under 260w is good, but I could move it if you think it's necessary?
  10. Hammer coral question - ¿ ?

I would assume it acts as an airbag. Suppose a hermit comes too close, it can blow up and push/sting whatever is near.
  11. Hammer coral question - ¿ ?

There is a coral at my lfs, maybe a moon coral I can't remember, anyways it had a nickel sized bubble on it, and they told me it was a sweeper tentacle. I guess some coral don't have really long tentacles, they use whitish clear bubbles.
  12. Hammer coral question - ¿ ?

Could be a sweeper tentacle, used for defensive purposes, just a guess?
  13. Overfeeding?

Thanks, my yellow dumps out big green logs all the time!! I'll try the lighting recomendation, I need to get timers! I do a 5 gallon water change weekly, that's not enough?? What do you recommend?
  14. Overfeeding?

Words of encouragement, thanks again Jim. I do only have 40# of lr, I also have about 35-40# of base rock that has begun it's transformation into lr. All of my base rock is now covered in at least a little coralline algae, tubeworms and the like. I originally purchased 30# of lr from friend to...
  15. Overfeeding?

Thanks JimM, as the masses of diatoms build on my dsb, I manually remove them, and each time less and less come back. I just today found out what the sponges in my tank are. There are lots of them, and they are a harmless filter feeder as I understand it, but having so many is a sign of high...
