  1. Recommend a cheap chiller for a 29g...

The Ice Probe or the MicroChiller (which is just an IceProbe mounted in an Aquaclear filter) are both okay for VERY small amounts of chilling, but both require a seperate controller to control the temp... Bill Esposito did an excellent test of the IceProbe and posted his results at Reef...
  2. How Shallow in fine DSB?

Using sugar size argagonite in a 20 gallon tank (24X13X16), how shallow do you think one could make a DSB that is still effective–particualrily for denitrification? I was hoping to get by with around 3 inches, maybe a little more, but well under 4". Thanks, Todd
  3. Rinse/NOT Rinse Oolitic Sand In New Tank?

I finally found locally a bag of CaribSea sugar size argagonite (is anything more annoying that paying premium shipping $$$ for sand and rock!), and am amazed at how fine it is... I can see now why Ron Shimek calls it mud. This sand (30 lbs.) will be the foundation layer in a brand new 20...
  4. Actinic VHO vs. Actinic PC. The war to settle the score.

I just recently found out that most PC bulbs that are called actinic (or 7100K) are very much strong blue bulbs, but they are brighter than the Actinic 03, and do not fluoresce your animals as well as Actinic 03 bulbs. Phillips Actinic 03, the classic that started the actinic rage in reef...
  5. AquaStarLight: creating space between fixture and tank?

As mentioned by Matt, AB-Aqualine makes an elegant piano wire ceiling hanging setup for all their Aqualights that is just great--very easy to move the light up or down, or to remove it for bulb changes (costs around $30). If you're going to hang your light, I highly recommend it. I hung a...
  6. Feedback on "Jeff's Exotic Fish"...?

I was wondering if anyone could give some feedback on Jeffs Exotic Fish in Southern California...? I am shopping for live rock in the L.A. area... Jeff's seem to have an excellent selection of live rock and animals at good prices, and a nice WWW site...? Thanks, Todd
  7. Bak Pak with low bubble count/freshwater...?

A few weeks away from setting up my new reef tank, I thought I would give my new Bak Pak 2R skimmer a dry run... I set it up in a tall bucket of tap water, and started it up... I was shocked at the huge size of the bubbles and the very low number of them (they went directly up and out of the...
  8. 20,000K, 150 Watt HQI or 175W Coralife experiences...?

Thanks for the info Jeremy... It will be interesting to see what aqualine produces--they are a fine company... I see that you have such great prices prices on their Aquastarlight, which in a 24" fixture would be ideal for my tank. Did the radium produce a florescence effect at all? Todd
  9. 20,000K, 150 Watt HQI or 175W Coralife experiences...?

I would very much like to hear about any and all experiences with the 20,000K bulbs, BUT PARTICULARILY the 150 Watt HQI 20,000K double ended bulb...? I am wondering what the color is like, and wether or not animals florescence a little more with the higher blue arc... I would really like to...
  10. 12K-20K Halide More Blue/Bio Luminescence?

Is it true that the newer higher Kelvin halide bulbs (12K, 14K, 20K) have a much more noticable blue hue to the eye, providing for the bio luminescence of many corals without additional actinic lighting sources? I really like the broken light/rippling water lighting effect that halides give...
