I use a mag drive. Just stick in in your sump. Add a ball valve as well in case you need to reduce the flow. I don't have problems with it restarting after a power outage.

It's normal for a foxface to change it's color. It will happen whenever it startled and trying to hide. Check it out at night sometime.

I agree it will vary between day and night. However, isn't the daytime reading higher than at night? I thought it was due to the respiration of the macro algae.
