The only one i thought there was is that one plays video games and one doesnt.

Someone who was a tech junkie told me that there is so decoding thats not on the PS3 that most blue ray have. I dont think its true but i could be wrong..

Either way PS3/ blu ray rocks.

That was one of the deciding factors before I purchased the PS3. I figured that if Blue-Ray did lose the format war I would still have an over-priced gaming system. Now that we all know that there is no future for HD-DVD, along with current price of the PS3, it makes the decision that much easier. Stand alone Blue-Ray players cost almost as much as the PS3. Personally the decision is easy...

I agree. PS3 is the way to go. It makes updating the ever changing format easier. Also, it is a very good Blu-ray player and does a great job upconverting the traditional DVD formats. I have one and I love it. I have been using it more as a DVD player than anything else.

jim-

as you know 1 plays games the other doesnt.ok so here is my breakdown for it.

dvd player-- great piece of equipment, get the one made by sony. its easier for updates that are needed from time to time on them. the samsungs are also good, but a little pricey if you ask me. here is the thing with the sonys dvd player-- you can get one for 200$. but that one does not play cd's. if you care about that. personally i have a cd player so big deal. but works great. all the salesmen will try and sell you the more expensive one because inventory i bet. lol. after that the other brands are just learning to make them.

PS3- you get a family entertainment center that is capable of doing just more then games. you get a wireless keyboad and you can browse the internet. so its also a computer. you can upload music and use as a juke box as well. then of course you have the blue ray dvd player that can upgrade any regualar dvd to near hd. (so can the dvd players as well. forgot that) also the kids will love the ps3 for games. the 40 gig is not all backwards compatable. easy updates as well.

thats my take on it. if i was you i would go ps3. but you make your own decisions.

And for all you computer junkies who like to download movies, you can set up the PS3 to act as a player through wireless for movies you downloaded. There is a movie driver update too on one of the forums for the drivers needed to play all the MP3/divx/wmov formats somewhere too.

Nice easy way to throw movies and stuff from your computer to the TV.

I'm all for PS3 being a PS2 owner now for years, so the addition on the bluray was huge, but that being said i own the Xbox 360 and as for gaming feel alot more comfortable with that system at this point ... :birthday:

I also seem to think that at some-point Microsoft with have to throw out a bluray external player for it so it can compete (my originally idea is that according to some sources 2010 both PS3 and 360 will get some updates and I have a feeling the 360 will be made over with a bluray player built in ..) :splitspin

If so you heard it here first lol ...
As far as buying one or the other its simple, do you want a family gaming center with a high end dvd player built in or just wanna watch movies ... if so than just buy a bluray player ...

The wii still pwn's. Go Brawl! But regarding this matter i'm waiting until christmas to make my decision about buying a ps3 or just a blue ray player. If the prices drop on players dramatically by christmas i'll just buy the blue ray player, if the prices stay the same then PoS3 it is.

Upgrading stand-alone players is pretty easy - if you have a PC. You simply download the upgrade from the Sony web-site, burn it to a disc, and put the disc into your player. It will do whatever it needs to. I have a Mac and it looks like Sony's upgrades are for PCs only.

Thanks all - chief, forget it - I am hooked but there are no really good flying/combat games - I am not an "on the ground" combat kind of guy - I am also a driving/racing freak and the Wii is challenged here as well (least what I can find).

Looks like I'll wait to see what the holidays brings - maybe I'll do the black Friday wait up all night thing for $199  = hey, why not, I stayed out in the Noreaster hail/snow storm for 12 hours with my kerosene heater and 30 below sleeping bag to get the Wii :thrash:

I just went through the same thing and wound up buying a PS3.

PS3 was the win for me since it is upgradable to Profile 2 once that arrives, and also plays games. The Blueray players you see on sale for 2 and $300 are 1.1 and will only be 1.1. 2.0 adds internet content which can only be streamed over a network / wireless connection which those 1.1 players physically don't have. There's nothing to say you'll actually use the 2.0 features but it's nice to know you'll have the ability on your new purchase.

Another problem for me is the remote control. For whatever reason Sony had the wonderful idea of using bluetooth (RF) instead of IR. So those universal remotes you may (harmony's included) have aren't goin to work with the PS3. There are a few workarounds for that but never the same functionality of the aftermarket PS3 remote. RF has it's advantages but there's not enough RF equipment yet for remote companies to include it.
