:tired: I don't think global warming should be a political issue, unfortunately it has been made one. WE are not helping the planet or ourselves by pumping vast amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere. It's not like volcanos are responsible for it :banghead: humans are.
If we want the planet to resemble anything close to what it looks like now then I think something needs to be done sooner rather than later. Just in case I'm buying some land in the rockies, it's value may rise when it becomes water front property

The biggest thing the average person can do to be more green is stop flying. One nonstop trip from San Francisco to New York puts out more carbon and oxidized nitrogen than one years worth from a home and vehicle use.

The whole post in the link is just comment no data anywhere at all to proof or disproof his saying.

I do not find it interesting.

BTW for the debunkers, why attacking Al Glore? Is it because he is the former American VP, a political figure.. or just look ugly??? I think for those who are more into the nature live have felt(not necessarily scientifically proven) that something is wrong about the changing nature balance. I felt it way before I even know who the hack is Al Gore. I think this global warming thing(or scare) come out from many of our own hearts not because he stirred it up. Just like I scared of nuclear whatever(bomb or energy) has nothing to do with, let say, someone warning everywhere is making nuclear weapons. If they are dangerous, they are dangerous. We just have to let the scientists specialized on that stuff to continue to investigate more. I think actual concern should focus on how fast the rate of this global warning is and strike a balance that we don't have to change present live style much, while the consequence is not too hard to handle.

Acid Rain, Hole in the Ozone layer, Killer Bees, and now Global warming.
Follow the money...This will always tell the truth. Ask yourself who is
making a buck off this.

It all boils down to human nature wanting to be able to feel that they can control
something around them...

Is CO? a pollutant? No. It is a vital part of our atmosphere/ecosystem. There are
a lot of studies that have shown that with the increase in CO?, there has also been
an increase of plant life. Is this bad? You want to save a tree? Drive a Hummer.

CO? is not the largest "Green House Gas". It is a very, very minuscule percentage.
The overwhelming element that creates the "Green house Effect" is produced
more abundantly by the "Greenest" cars. It is produced by the cooking of our food.
It is produced by us just being. Unfathomable amounts are produced by the oceans and
lakes of the world. It is produced from our reef tanks.

Can you guess?

Water Vapor. It makes up approximately 98% of the "Green House Effect".

I say we stop evaporation!!! This will return our planet to the condition it was in to
beginning. :)

In our tanks, we know that when you start up a tank you are going to go through
a cycle. Yet you do not believe that a planet would go through one?
Our tanks are infantesimal compared to the size of this planet. Our tanks take 4-6 weeks
to "Settle Down" and another 2-3 years to "Mature". How long should a planet take?

A solar system?

Do what makes you sleep well at night.

And, Yes, I am a Californian that does not hug trees. :shhh:

I'm sorry, no offense intended, but your post is so far from mainstream science now...
to use your theory though more people will make money maintaining the status quo, than by trying to alleviate the problem by combating pollution.

This article was published last year on the relationship of CO2 and global temps, the last few years according to this study CO2 is still on the rise but temps have dropped a little. http://icecap.us/images/uploads/Evans-CO2DoesNotCauseGW.pdf

Wingo...I agree more studies need to be done and we need to let science finish. Trying to fix what may not be broken could lead to more problems, based on the above study CO2 is not the culprit everyone once thought. I don't recall the source but remember one study even suggesting this may be due to the planet pulling closer to the sun. IMO Al Gores the largest target since many believe he started the push for change without knowing why, add in he's a not exactly green at home and you start asking why should I if you don't practice what you preach.

ZANY...I don't believe you're on a high horse, just very passionate about the world around you. This thread may do nothing more then allow a few reef keepers to discuss the world around them BUT if a few do simple things like turn the lights off when the leave the room, use the radio instead of the TV to keep the dog company, switch to CF light in their homes it made a huge difference; not just to the world around them but to their wallets as well.

No, I don't partake. None taken.

but your post is so far from mainstream science now...

More and more of the original scientists that first started to claim Global warming, are now reversing their previous statements. Take for example the Weather Channel Guy. (Don't remember his name. He was the Founder of TWC.)

to use your theory though more people will make money maintaining the status quo, than by trying to alleviate the problem by combating pollution.

Al Gore is making a Buttload!...

Al-Gore-Office-tm.jpg

Glad to know that the number one supporter of "Green" is following his own advice. WTH is his Carbon Footprint.

The point I was trying to make in the opening line is that they have been wrong in the past. Acid Rain, Ozone Hole...All life on the planet was to be dead before 2000.

i think everyone agrees that climate change is happening. The argument is whether or not the climate change was caused by man or can be prevented by man.

Some feel that we are still coming out of the ice age, and the earth has been warming ever since. there was a time when the glaciers didnt exist and New York WAS completely underwater.

So true, also Long Island was created the last time (the 10th time) that Manhattan was buried under a 1 mile thick ice sheet. There have been 10 ice ages with usually about a 10,000 year span in between them. All of human history has occurred during the last gap. Scientists are trying to determine the correlation between the warming and the cooling. Obviously warming stopped the last ice age and continues on to a point whereby it begins to cool. What triggers the cooling is still a mystery. CO2 however is not the cause of warming, unless you grant money or paycheck depends on you saying so. The ice sheets in Antarctica have shown that CO2 levels have been many times higher than they are today and at each of these points in history there was a lower average temperature than there is today.

ok.....the weather channel guy (John Coleman).....a weather man......not a scientist.....a weather man.....and how often are weather man right about anything? Not to mention if you look at this man's career he has been forced out of every single postion he has ever held including the weather channel until now he is a weather man for KUSI news an independent station in San Diego. He can't even get a job for one of the real networks. Yeah I want to take advice from this guy.

Sure Al Gore probably...he's a government figure who cares about the earth and our environment. If only we could have more people in Washington with the same attitude!

The problem is everyone in Washington is JUST LIKE HIM!

Citizen: "Senator, wait I have an issue of great importance to talk to you about.........................."

Seantor: (Hmmmmm. Not bad I can definitely get on TV talking about this but how can I best use this issue as a PR piece for myself...)

have a link? I'm trying to limit my computer time to lesson my carbon footprint :tub:

Really? I think both the believer and the non believers are saying we have the most CO2 ever but that one side of the aisle say it's CO2 causing global warming while the other side says CO2 is a product of temperature warming therefore we should not blame the current industrialization.

I'll google it but you can too. I thought it was common knowledge that we aren't at the highest CO2 levels in history. Granted it was the far distant past but it was colder. There's always sensationalist headlines like "the higest in 650,000 years!!!" but if you google some more you'll find records dated to millions of years ago that show far higher CO2 levels and it was cold. As much as some would have you believe that there isn't a direct correlation between temp and CO2. There's an X factor we haven't figured out yet.

Most importantly though, I hope that the absolute hilarity and irony of this is understood by others than me. Everyone here knows that most electricity comes from burning coal right? Remember coal, the worst polluter on earth. The dirtiest burning fuel on the planet. That's what runs your halides and the chiller that they necessitate. :)

How much is everyone's electric bill? My whole house (now that I don't have a tank) costs me $120 a month. Three bedrooms, five air conditioners and laptops that are often plugged in. How many homes like mine could your tank power for a month? Yeah right, global warming. Let's all do something about it. Not really do something just post about it electronically via the power of burning coal. Awesome.

hey guess what were talking about todays problem, not millions of years ago. I don't think what is happening now is being created by bored newspaper editors looking for more exciting headlines.

I have no idea what your shouting from your soapbox. Coal, and your five air conditioners and you took your tank down
People around the world have been trying to do something. But it's hard getting everyone in the world on the same page. Our own government rejected the Kyoto Treaty, which is attempting to keep pollution in check.
But hey your house is cool so it's all good

My point was that this, a website for reefkeeping, is a hysterically ironic place for a conversation like this.

Perhaps if I lay it out another way:

Perhaps it would help to think about yoru fish tank in terms of what it really is. Imagine it's not plugged into electrical outlets but instead a coal fired electrical generator. That is what it is plugged into many miles or a few states away, but pretend it's in your room where you can see the smoke. Every day you toss in 10 to 15 pounds of coal and burn it to keep that reef going. You have any idea how much CO2 your tank puts off into the air? Any idea the toxic chemical that your tank produces?

Here, see for yourself:
http://science.howstuffworks.com/question481.htm

The mention of my home was to also point out that the "average tank" uses as much electricity as two average homes.

Now do you see why it's so funny that on a reefkeeping website people are talking about what should be done about global warming? :biglaugh:

It would be one thing if peple said: "Who cares!?" or "It's not real" I could respect that but when people clammer that not enough is being done while their fish tank pollutes more than my SUV! That's just hysterical.
