Seems like there's a fishing frenzy happening and I'd like to start a thread to keep everything in one place.

I've been fishing since childhood, but never really developed any real skills. I used to fish offshore in Tarrytown in a spot near the prison there.

I just started picking it up again and have been trying for stripers, most recently, onshore casting under the Whitestone Bridge.

I went last Saturday and caught a 12" striper and released it.

Currently, I'm using:

Rod: UglyStik Lite, 9 feet
Reel: Cabela's SS40
Line: Spiderwire, Ultracast Ultimate Braid, 30 lb, Hi-Vis Yellow

My current set-up is using a 3-way swivel, one for the weight (with a lighter tested line, since its rocky under the bridge and the weights tend to get snagged) and one for the lead/hook using Seugar Fluorocarbon leader, 30 lb tested. I've been using bloodworms and bunker to go for stripers.

What kind of set-ups are you using for stripers, or whatever else you're catching? I know there are a lot of experience anglers here and I'm excited to hear what you have to add.

Just wanted to say thanks for releasing the shorty!! There is nothing more discouraging than seeing someone keep a fish that is below the legal limit. Makes me want to throw them in the water.

We use eels most times when we go for stripers. :)

Get a 2nd rod for casting lures while you wait for something to hit the bait. Use lighter tackle and you'll have a ball with the small bass. Use rubber storm shads for bass....if blues are around, switch to metal spoons. If you use a 7 ft rod spooled with 10 lb test (good quality, like Yo-Zuri hybrid), you'll have a great time. And you should still be able to bring in bigger fish, if you play them carefully.

Froggie, I grew up surf fishing the Jamaica Bay, NY Bight area. Spots such as the marine parkway bridge, breezy point piers and jetty have always produced nice bass for the spring/summer run. I pretty much chunked with conventional gear such as a newell reel with a 10' or 11' lamiglass or St.crox rod. I like to use a fishfinder rig with an 8/0 gamugatsu octopus hook and a pyramid sinker. Bunker heads or chunks topped with bunker guts always produce large bass. The key is to be in the right area in the right time. You can keep on top of the posted reports on Noreast.com or feel free to ask me (I run several charter boats in the area)

Thanks Jackson--- I had forgotten you ran charters. I'll def try the fish guts, had never thought of that.

I'm playing around with line types right now. Still trying to figure out whats best for line or lead b/w mono, braided and fluoro/hybrids.

Froggie - I have to look for the flyer but you can get the phone number for Caleb Smith State Park online. The beginner lessons were $85 for a 2 or 3 hour dry class I believe and then there was the more advanced class where they took you out on the water and was like $100 or $150. I'll try to find the flyer. If you take it, let me know as they try to get 3 people to a class.

Central Park lake has largemouth bass, probably not smallmouths...although I wouldn't be surprised if smallmouths (which prefer cooler water) are in the reservoir. All NYC lakes can be fished legally by someone with a NYS fishing license (not needed for SW or tidal areas), but its strictly catch and release for all species.

went out on The Osprey IV out of Port Jeff. Very slow evening trip ( porgies ). Most people caught at least one but some didnt catch any, a few caught a handful. It picked up at the end of the trip so the captain kept us out an extra hour but we couldnt stay for the tide. Its my 2nd trip on that boat ( first one was the 2nd Fluke day. I arranged to charter it with a bunch of students from my school, terrible weather and fishing but we had fun ). I'm gonna give them one more try because the crew really is great and the crowd is nice on that boat but i really want to try some local surf action.
