Hi everyone. I am an avid reef person. I have two 90g tanks, one reef, one Malawi Cichlid. I live in a large city south of New York and am considering a move to Long Island, Commack area. Just wondering what you all think of that area. I don't want to start a flame war or "my city is better than your city" thread. Just looking for some useful advice on maybe where to rent in that area, where would be a good place to look in terms of commute to Commack, how much to expect to pay for a 1 bdrm apartment or small house to rent, etc. What are the neighborhoods like out there? Any reef people live in or around Commack on this board?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I lived in Northport right by Commack and it is a great place to live. There are some areas that are nicer than others, but you can find a decent 1br place in the $1000 - $1200 a month range.

I grew up in nassau so I don't know commack that well but I know there are a few areas on long island where nice neighborhoods are butted up next to crappy neighborhoods so check the surrounding areas. By new york standards suffolk is very spacious so you should be able to find a fairly roomy place. Alot of new construction/development has gone on in suffolk so you should be able to find something new that can meet your electrical requirements for your tanks. I assume you have a job in commack; I would mapquest the area and see if you can find out which roads have traffic during rush hour and choose neighborhoods that would be an easy commute. Finally, rather than pay a real estate agent to find a place for you look in the local town papers, newsday, and craigslist.

Commack is right by me. Its a great area, very nice to live and an outstanding school district. Prices for houses are (and apartments might be) a little higher due to the great school district and taxes, but if you can afford it, you will not be disappointed. As far as commuting goes, most of the area is near to the LIE or to NSP, and Jericho Tpke runs through it. So other than dealing with normal LI traffic, you shouldnt have much of a commuting problem.

I would be working in Commack. So would it better to shoot for a neighborhood a little east of Commack or a little west of Commack (or north or south ...). We were looking at like Deerpark and Smithtown and places surrounding Commack (since most Commack is industrial anyway, it seems). Definitely looking to rent a 1 or 2 bdrm in a house or something like that, cheaper that way and usually better space. The apartments we saw on-line for Commack looked really depressing and expensive.

Anyway, thanks for the replies. Yep, going to have to liquidate (no pun intended) my present livestock (2 x 90g standard, one mbuna, one reef). That's going to hurt but I am looking forward to starting over again with a new system (probably a self-automated nano of some sort to start). My present 90g reef has been up for 8-9 yrs and I will definitely miss it. But I think it will be worth it for the experience of living on LI and this potential new job. Sounds like there are several great clubs out there too. Nothing to compare to The Washington DC Area Marine Aquarium Society (WAMAS), but hey, nobody is perfect (just kidding!) :)

Well I live in Deer Park, I know the area pretty well. Apartments here arent too bad, there are a few not so good areas as there are in all towns. Overall I like it. Smithtown is nice but usually a little expensive. East northport and northport are good if you can find something you like. Dix Hills is great but expensive, certain parts of huntington are ok. If you want, I've pretty much lived here all my life, feel free to shoot me a pm and I will help you out with anything you need to know about the areas.
