Please tell me I'm not the only one to have caught the mens 4 x 100 freestyle relay on Sunday night. It was absolutely ONE OF the best relays I've ever seen......in any sport.

When you watch it, please take note the French team was favored to win the relay by a large margin. Here's the comment by one of the French swimmers that helped to 'motivate' the American team:

“The Americans?” Bernard said. “We will smash them.”

Without Jason Lezak's ALL TIME BEST individual performance in the final leg of the relay, Michael Phelps would not be in the running to capture 8 gold medals in one Olympics games. FYI, Mark Spitz's record is 7 gold medals in the 1972 games.

GO USA

Here's a link to the page with the video on it. Find the video that says '
U.S. men win 4x100m free relay' .

Enjoy,

I caught it, but I did not know the US was not favored to win.
I was surprised how close it was  No wonder the French team looked
so bummed after loosing :)

I haven't missed a moment of the swimming prelims, semi's or finals. Phelps is absolutely amazing. Lezak's anchor leg of the 4 x 100 free relay was one of the best swims I've ever seen. Relays are always so much more exciting than individual events.

Phelps finished his 200 meter fly tonight and threw his goggles off. He said they filled with water as soon as he dove in from the start. Bob Costas had the best line of the Olympics so far. When he heard what happened with Phelps' goggles, he said, 'if anyone was wondering if Michael Phelps can beat the rest of the world blindfolded, they got their answer tonight!!!' LMAO. Classic.

I grew up with Spitz as my hero. My kids are swimmers too and they're fortunate to have Phelps.

Just a spectacular display of swimming dominance.

I believe Phelps has to be considered the most dominating athlete today. Forget Sid the Kid, Federer, Nadal, Kobe, Lebron, or Tiger. Nobody goes out there and wins everything they do like Phelps is doing.

I feel the same way. But I'm biased  so I normally don't say it :shhh:

Each event he wins is with a new world record too

Russ how many more olympics can Phelps compete at this level?
I'd have to compare him to Jordan in terms of competitiveness, raw talent and determination.

JH, assuming Phelps remains healthy, he'll go to the 2012 Olympics also. He has already stated that he would never ever attempt a schedule like he's doing in this current Olympics. He's swimming 17 races in one week. That's outrageous. Who's to say that this sentiment doesn't change between now and 2012 though. If he wanted to, he could easily go to the 2016 games as well. Look at Dara Torres (41 y/o). Not saying he'd be as dominant as he is today, but he could easily make the teams.
