I just bought a new Dell laptop.. But some how it won't let me connect to internet.. I have the Westell wireless modem that comes with verizon.. But on my sony laptop I'm able to connect to internet.
On the dell laptop, it find the wireless signal, but it won't let me connect it to interent.. It keep on saying network fail. It happen on my new HP laptop also, that's why I return it.. Anyone know? Do I need to get Linksys or D-link wireless inorder for the dell to connect to internet?

Yeah the same questions as above still stand. Security settings may not have been set on your NEW laptops to allow you on your current network. Or the other situation stands that your router is old enough that it doesn't recognize the NEW laptops.

Maybe is my router is old that don't recognize my new laptop.. Cuz I can scan other ppl network, and when I click on it, it ask me for the password.. When I click on my own network, it didn't even ask me for my password.. If I get a wireless router, will it work? which one would you recommend?

If you are using VISTA, you may need to turn off your firewall to connect to the router.

Hmm how come I didnt think of that.. The new laptop is using the VISTA while the old one is using the XP.. now do I turn off the firewall in my laptop or the router? heheh

Hi peeps... First post for me here, didn't think it would be an IT related post

First, what is the model of the router that Verizon gave you? Westell 327W? Model will be noted on the bottom of the router...

Second, more than likely the Westell is a router of it's own. If you put a Linksys, DLink or Netgear behind it, you will be creating a second LAN segment which is unecessary for you. Only way around it is turning the Westell into an Ethernet Bridge instead of a router. So before you run out to Bestbuy, let's confirm a few things.

Third, did you configure the Westell when Verizon first pulled your DSL? Perhaps a tech savvy friend/family? I have money on whoever set it up for you turned on MAC filtering allowing only your 2 Sony notebooks to connect to the router. After you confirm question #1, we can work on checking the configuration to see if MAC filtering is enabled, if it is, you just need to plug in the MAC address to your new Dell onto the Westell and it'll connect then.

Is an old wireless westell router and I have to go home and check what's the model.. When I got the wireless router, all I did was plug to my desktop and that was it, I didn't change any setting at all.. Even my brother in law try on his mac laptop, it still won't connect..
I will get back to you tonite about the model on the router..

Thanks

Mak, I am an IT tech but I am with Cheif, if the router is part of your Verizon equipment package you should call verizon. That is why you pay the monthly bill. If the router is purchased from verizon and you own it well thats a different story.

since your other laptops r working i can assume the connection problem is not on the isp provider's end.
wireless connection can b tricky especially for vista. heres some tips:
check n make sure your wireless adapter driver is working n updated. make sure u apply the same secuirty protocol and the correct key. make sure theres no 3rd party firewall software. check if u have mac address filtering on the router. even if all the settings r right, sometimes u need to reset the router for the new laptop to connect.

btw: when u say "On the dell laptop, it find the wireless signal, but it won't let me connect it to interent"
i'm assuming u meant u can see your own wireless connection by the ssid.

Yes is the 327w, and I even turn off the power and wait about a mins to turn it back on, and still no good.. I am using the sony one, and I am able to connect to internet.. As for the dell, still won't connect..

Yes that's correct, I can see my wireless network, but it won't let me connect... I guess I have to call up verizon and see what's they can do...
