Procedure

Using BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1, BlackBerry smartphone personal identification number (PIN) messages and Short Message Service (SMS) messages that have been sent and received on a BlackBerry smartphone can be logged. The logs are kept in a central repository. By default, only phone call logging is turned on.
To modify the settings for PIN and SMS message logging, complete the following steps:
  1. Open BlackBerry Manager and select the BlackBerry Enterprise Server to be modified.
  2. Select the Server Configuration tab and click Edit Properties.
  3. Click Sync Server.
  4. Double-click Audit Root Directory.
  5. To save the log files, type the file path where the files are to be saved and click OK.
  6. In the left pane, click BlackBerry Domain.
  7. Select the Global tab and click Edit Properties.
  8. Click IT Policy.
  9. In the IT Policy Administration section, double-click IT Policies.
  10. Select one of the policies in the list.
  11. Click Properties > PIM Sync Policy Group.
  12. To monitor SMS or BlackBerry smartphone PIN messages, complete the steps in the following table.

ActionProcedureMonitor the SMS messages BlackBerry smartphone users send and receive from BlackBerry smartphones.
    1. Click Disable SMS Messages Wireless Sync.
    2. In the drop-down list, select False.
Monitor the BlackBerry smartphone PIN messages BlackBerry smartphone users send and receive from BlackBerry smartphones.
    1. Click Disable PIN Messages Wireless Sync.
    2. In the drop-down list, select False.
  13. Click OK to close the open windows.
  14. Restart the BlackBerry Synchronization Service. The BlackBerry Enterprise Server creates the log files using the following formats:
    • BlackBerry smartphone PIN messages: PINLog_<YYYYMMDD>.csv
    • SMS messages: SMSLog_<YYYYMMDD>.csv
    • Phone calls: PhoneCallLog_<YYYYMMDD>.csv
Important: Restarting certain BlackBerry Enterprise Server services will delay email message delivery to BlackBerry smartphones. For more information, see KB04789.
Note: Logging for BlackBerry smartphone PIN messages, phone logs, and SMS messages can be turned on or off. The daily log file age cannot be customized.
Note: Turning on SMS logging does not include MMS messages.

I had my office manager check the status of our BES and this was her response "I talked to Luis from "IT Vendor" and he said our system is NOT set to track any of our im, emails, text. He said he knows this for sure."

LOL. I'm usually not one to get paranoid about being watched but it is scary how easy it is becoming for people to know your business.

If I am not mistaken (matt chme in here) any salaried employee has no intellectual property within the company and all that is done by that employee is the property of the employer, so, they basically own your brain - if you're an indy contractor, thats a different story.

one should always assume that if you're using IT at work, they own it and can see it (it can be soepenaed in court I believe)

I could care less what my boss sees - if he wants me to be available at night or whenever, then the phone is equally mine :iamwithst

Of course but in this case the company is using their technology (Blackberry Enterprise Server) to view and log SMS Messages which has nothing to do with BES (in my case it is AT&T Media Net EDGE). I know this is true because our BES is currently not working as it got corrupted and registries were deleted but yet I still can send/receive personal email, SMS messages and Blackberry Messages. Clearly all of which is run through the AT&T Media Net EDGE.

So based on what your saying and what I assumed, they should be able to check my work email which is delivered through the BES (their technology) but SMS messages, phone calls and personal email are delivered through AT&Ts tehnology so I thought I was safe especially since I pay for the phone and service. Turns out they can see and log it all. :frown: I feel if the phone is paid for by me and the bill never is seen by my employer, they have no right to the information or data that is associated with it other than the work email which in this case they manage through BES.

I guess I should have kept using the HP IPAQ :irked:

In my current and past employers, if the company wants the employee to use his/her personal devices, they would pay for that portion of the monthly re-occurring bill. ie. they would pay for your data plan if they want you accessible via Blackberry or SMS Text. If you're doing their business on your own nickel, you're one helluva a nice guy.

I am! My last two jobs completely paid for my phones which led to me having two cell phones (one personal and one business). That became annoying so I decided to use my own device thinking I would still have the privacy but only need one phone. So much for that idea
