When I got my card, there was only one card.
It certified you for everything. Usually I dive on my own boat but if I need to go somewhere to dive and someone has to check my card, they say, I never saw a card like that. I think it just says Basic SCUBA diver or something like that which was the only card there was in the seventees. I tell them I am certified to dive with anything.
So far no one questioned me.

What about cave diving & ice diving too. Any kind of diving with something overhead (wreck, cave, ice) requires another C card.

Nope, my card does it all. PADI would disagree because they don't make any new money on us old divers but there was no other certification when I got certified but the one I have. They probably would not let me dive with Nitrox but caves and wrecks, rescue, shore, boat, night, decompression, medical aspects, dangerous animals etc were all covered in my course. It was a 12 week course, half in a pool and half in a classroom with two open water dives.

Its not just the buoyancy but also learning how to manipulate the air in the suit to help you ( i guess that's included in buoyancy ) achieve proper stability, posture, etc.

That's exactly it. Also there are a couple of underwater skills - one is being able to right yourself in the suit and if your feet start to accumulate too much air and your head is going down too much. The second skill is to be able to plug and unplug the air hose connected to the suit underwater. It is definitely different diving with a dry suit as opposed to a wet suit.

Ellebelle, if you dive off my boat I won't check your C card so you can dive in caves, wrecks, dry suit, wet suit, blue suit, no suit, shark infested, piranna infested, toxic
water, no water, whatever. I also have no insurance for divers so you are on your own but if you get hurt, you have to take my boat.
I havent lost any divers yet. I recovered all of them eventually

my comments weren't meant to offend if they did I apologies.:splitspin

I can fully understand extra training required to comfortably and safely dive in a dry suit.
I just frown upon "institutions" promoting C cards for some basic skills that should be covered in basic courses.
just a way for them to take more money from people
