Is it just me or does the current frag craze seem similar to the comic book collector inflation of the 90s where everything was hot and gonna be a collectible.

I used to love browsing the for sale forums to find good deals. Not dirt cheap stuff, just good old corals at a discount from what the stores sell them for. Now I feel like it is cheaper to purchase stuff at stores than on MR.

Also more than half the frags are dime sized and extremely costly. I mean it takes forever for 6 zoos to become a colony or a chalice to grow into a decent sized piece.

I've been on MR for years and feel like an old fart just saying stuff like "when i was...", but browsing the for sale boards is depressing. I'd just rather wait for frag swaps and buy them from the vendors. I feel like I got good sized frags and deals there.

My 2 cents

Walter, I have always given corals to people at very good prices "dirt cheap" (most of the time I just give them away). This works out great because for everyone because you make friends and you always have frags waiting for you in other tanks.

I know what you mean about all the high priced frags + equipment but just let it be. In the end the guys asking high prices looks like an a$$ when he has to bump his own thread 17 times :) I think you're better off dealing with people privately. If you know someone has a coral you want it doesn't hurt to ask to buy a frag.

The market (hobbyists) determines the prices. You might think something's nice but that doesn't necessarily guarantee you a sale. And if you think something is crap doesn't mean others won't pay high prices for it. Fact of life. We all do it.

If you think the prices here are expensive the just go check out some other reef site's for sale forums.. As far as using online vendors some sites without singleing any out they also charge astronomical prices for 1/2 inch frags. If you don't believe me I can provide you with links with no problem.
Nobody said this hobby was cheap!!

I agree.
I try to keep my coral prices low and affordable as most people know my prices. I typically will rather frag for the swaps only though because it takes up a lot of time to fragging and meeting many people separately. Sometimes seller sell high prices corals, but I will just not buy it unless I am desperate to have it. Just know your budget and limit.

Just wait for good deals, they Always Come Around.
I find there are more good deals than bad on this site. And the people you get good deals off of are usually the ones you want to deal with (personality wise) anyway.
Any time I have dealt with someone twice, I have always gotten a better deal the second time.
IMO There are some real cool people here

When you deal with somebody you like, check out there freinds list, you usualy wind up meeting more cool people

I think what really has cause prices to go up is everything now has a fancy made up name. Because of that people charge an arm and a leg for the same coral that you couldn't even give a way not to long ago.

In the end it's best to buy what you like and not just because it's the in thing. The old trading network is still there but with things selling for big money it's not as friendly, and sharing, as it once was.

I like having an LE piece that only a little bit of people have...
No offense but half of the people that have a problem paying more for these LE or extravagantly colored and priced pieces wouldn't be able to keep the color on these frags anyway... I've given away a lot of LE nice colored pieces that I don't know where they are now, and if I do, the person couldn't keep the color they received the frag for longer than a week..
There are mixed feelings on LE pricing.. But I do understand what your saying..

I agree with all of your points, it just seems like as with comics in the 90s everything was over produced and most everything turned out to be not valuable. As more and more of these frags enter the market I assume the value of them will go down. Luckily with corals that is a good thing because more frags hopefully means we're pulling less from the ocean.

Funny I PM'd a few people that I've dealt with in the past tonite after I posted and I think that is a good way to go about it. The marketplace has so much more traffic, when something good pops up it's hard to grab it in time. I'm not knocking anyone here, I've just noticed that the marketplace has changed quite a bit over time. It's great to see such robust activity.

It's just funny that it is harder to find shrooms that acans, chalices and zoos.

The one one thing I am willing to wait for and buy from a fellow reefer even at higher than store price is fish. I think it's important to get a fish that has been living in someone elses aquarium for a while.

Anyway, thanks for the thoughts everyone.
