Glad to hear. Its always nice to be able to resolve something like this without having to resort to lawyers and housing and court. Noone wins in that situation.
I do not practice law in NYC but aided in many landlord tenant cases(small and large) and experience enough to tell you the following:
Assuming you are talking about residential landlord tenant case, the landlord is supposed to have a courier or hire a marshall to hand deliver the "10 day notice."(currently, number of days may differ) You can go to the housing court close to Canal Street(ground floor) and they have FREE legal aids(but they only show up at the court day, so you can hardly have a chance to dicuss with them before the hearing) from the city to help you if you file a complaint that the landlord never properly deliver the notices to you. The filing clert may let you see one of the judge presiding to see whther they can acept your case.
If your are fighting a commercial lease, NEVER use an attorney who have been a city legal aid-they will be too faithful to the justice system in general and expect every attorneys of the world will play the game according to the book.
