Computer help needed
I have an HP desktop running Windows Vista. It has a built in card reader that takes the main types of memory cards. For some reason, whenever I use the function to Stop the Hardware so that I can remove the card, the computer stops recognizing the reader so that I have to restart it if I want to put in a memory card again. I checked the device manager and it shows an exclamation mark so I opened the device. It says the following:
"Windows cannot use this hardware device because it has been prepared for "safe removal", but it has not been removed from the computer. (Code 47)

To fix this problem, unplug this device from your computer and then plug it in again.

You need to restart your computer before the changes you made to this device will take effect.

Click 'Check for solutions' to send data about this device to Microsoft and to see if there is a solution available."
I let Windows to check for a solution but it came up with nada. Any ideas?

You should click on the drive icon in the explorer window and click eject to remove your card. If you stop the hardware from the safely remove hardware, it stops the software that makes the drive work hence, your predictament.

Unfortunately for XP,it will no longer have support for it in the near future so they're pretty much forcing us to upgrade to Vista or Windows 7,I have the 64bit version of Vista.I has it's bugs but okay otherwise.

is it under warranty? it can be a couple of things...

1. you can reinstall the driver and make sure you get the correct vista driver and reinstall it.

2. try pressing eject instead of stopping the device...

3. you might need to replace that part which you can get from hp if its covered under your warranty if not it might cost you a couple of dollars.

any other questions feel free to call ;)

Windows XP will be supported until 2014, in extended support. My guess is they are going to need to have this fall over and support everyone, via hotfixes and security updates since not many switched over to vista.

Vista is a pig and I guess Microsoft finally came to realize it and are pushing to get windows 7 out quickly to make up for it.

Thanks. I think I'll try just ejecting the card and see what happens. I bought it from Costco so it has their service included but I never manage to find the time to call when they're open so I figured I'll ask here in the meantime.

you can damage the card by doing that. Just thought id let you know. :birthday:

It is just like a floppy disk.. If it is not in use, and it is not about to perform any reading or writing, there should be no reason why you can't pull it.

Been doing it for years.

When I worked for an IT company we did it hourly and never lost a card. SD, XD, Duo etc etc etc.

I like Apple but they always break down too often.

That's right, don't get an apple. Stick to your "stable" PC

Does MS still offer free downgrading to XP?

As far as the memory card. If I'm reading off of it, I'll just pull it out when I'm done. I only eject it if I'm specifically writing to it.
