I've lived in 3 different upstate cities (Grew up just south of Rochester, went to school in Syracuse, and lived in Albany for 3 years).. I moved down here in October of 2008.

I like it. I like many things, but especially the ocean, NYC itself, and the cultural diversity.. (other things as well, of course)

But upstate has its advantages. (Obvious, maybe, but still...) You're much more spread out, it's a slower pace (bad and good, depending) and much, much cheaper. Yes, you make less upstate, but it's not enough to justify the insane housing prices here.

I have a friend who's married, 3 kids.. they live in the "richest" town just outside of Rochester, just bought a house.. it's over 3800 sq feet.. 1 acre lot.. pool.. the works. You know what they paid? $350,000.

Try that here.. haha.. And the traffic is so much worse. The thing that's hardest for me to get used to though is how there are so many people who act "better than you" because they 'have more money' .. (or are a 'better religion' or.. whatever reason).. That's such an awful way to act..

Those three are the worst parts about long island, IMO. Haha.. Overall though, I agree that it's human nature to sit and wonder about how 'life would be better if I moved somewhere else'..
:)

Wingo that's why you get a house with guest rooms so they can visit

Leaving NY altogether is a good idea after retirement, the pension you collect goes much farther other places than it does here.
