Nick96ss....
Where do you do the majority of your fly rodding? I've done it in saltwater with some success (very frustrating chasing around the false ablies). Big bluefish in September/October on my 8wt. are a blast. I've always talked about fly fishing some local streams near where I hunt. I've heard there are some really nice trout there (near the Susquehana in Broome County). I know there are decent small mouths there. Do you fish LI?
Rich......
Yeah right! This year we're gonna slay a dragon or two. I'll be more than happy to take triple wraps on a beast for you....especially after all the help you gave me with my new hobby.
Duke..
I know you don't get to fish that often, so instead I'll post something for you......pics were taken last season. Amen to technology!
Nick....
If you're in City Island, you have some pretty cool opportunities for SW fly rodding in your own back yard. Nevermind that CI harbor is absolutely amazing in the Fall when the bunker are thick. I personally caught my biggest bluefish ever there (a 23# monster). The shores to the East (and West for that matter) of the bridge off of the island are a phenominal place for schoolies at day break and in the dark. I've also slaughtered the bass off of Pea Isl. which isn't far from there (only accessable by boat and private property of Huegenot Yacht Club). Drifting around the incredible structure there is great....especially for fly rodding. I never caught any truely large fish there (biggest was 40"), but it's still good. You may want to give it a try this Spring. LNB isn't that far either which is also a great early Spring area.
Anyone have any tips for a rookie freshwater flyfisherman? I was thinking about picking up a 4 weight or something along those lines. Too light/too heavy?
Think I'm gonna sleep on the boat tonight (in the driveway) I can't take the pressure anymore!! Gotta go fishing (maybe even Catching). I missed my Herring fix in January this year...
Anyway I have a nice stock of cigars just waiting for April 15th!
Hey Wally - I'm right next door to you and am always looking for a fishing buddy. Most of my fishing is party boats because I dont really know where to go for surf fishing in the area .
I'll be fishing for schoolies out in Cutchogue over my spring break....that may actually be before the season opens, but keepers don't come in there that early anyway.....
orca1 i am on city island, my backyard faces potters field ,i do fish through out the season. have caught many fish back there . never really thought of fly rodding there. might try it this year . i use a 6/7 weight fly rod for trout
Looks like we're all chomping at the bit! The bunker schools are here already. Bass are usually a few weeks behind them followed by "The Grease". Last year was a great Spring bite. With any luck, this year will be even better. Last year, we had fish fairly early on clams from the surf. No monsters, but point fish (NYSFC).
Any word on the new Winter Flounder regs? At my last surf fishing club meeting, there were talks of a complete shut down. To tell the truth, the WF numbers have really sucked over the past few years. It's a shame to hear that one of the primary reasons why stocks are down is due to over predation (mainly by the striped bass).
Wally....
Do you make canyon runs with your boat? I know there's a boat Wally's World I always hear about that usually gives the tuna a beatin'. That you?
LMAO Duke....
Can you believe I have about 2000 pics of deer? I started naming them last season. The pic of that buck was one of only 2 pics we got of him. My buddy saw him only once during archery. The buck passed by him at 60-70 yards. Right after that, a buck twice his size pinned him and ran off blowing. If it were my property, you would be there this October....trust me. We just got the tractor/plow up and running and we're gonna start the food plot in 2 weeks. Man it's a lot of work. Why can't we have chosen normal hobbies? Or hobbies that don't cost thousands and thousands of dollars? Between the fishing, boating, hunting, reefing, and now agriculture my calendar is filling up waaaaay too fast and my pockets are emptying even faster.....LOL.
While we're on the topic, any other hunters wandering around this site?
I'll let you know when I am going out on the boat. You are welcome. I usually have room, I only have two real fisherman buddies. Another fisherman is welcome as long as you don't ask me to bait your hook
