So the fiancee and I went to do some furniture shopping this weekend. And let me say there is a lot of nice quality furniture out there. We even visited Thomasville who has built their reputation on building and selling quality American made furniture, and the price shows it, with bedroom and dining room sets close to $10,000 each.
And then my friend and I went to look at a few other stores today. And thats when I started to look really close and hard at some of the higher end stuff in these stores. And there is was, staring me in the face... MADE IN CHINA. So we went to another name brand store... and again, MADE IN CHINA. Then to another store where I saw a dining room set that I KNEW was made by the Acme Furniture Corp based in NJ. This HAD to be American right? After talking to the sales guy, turns out that even that is made in China, and he even showed me that the exact same dining room set was available from 2 other manufacturers... proving that Acme didn't make it, they simply imported it from a Chinese manufacturer and that manufacturer sells it to different American companies.
I even stopped in Raymor and Flannigan and said "Show me anything American made" and the guy actually lauged at us, telling us that over 95% of furniture nowadays, even from the long time well known companies, are now made in China. And he went on to say that some are even made in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam. Oh, and Canada. Whoopie!
And then, later on, I found out that even the high end American made Thomasville is actually made in China! They apparently get away with saying it's made in America because the pieces are assembled here. But all the wood and woodwork and whatever else is done in China, with "Asian Hardwood". Nothing is pure Mahogany or Birtch or any other normal wood anymore. Even if they tell you it is.
So, in my ventures, the only American company that anyone knows of that STILL makes their furniture in America is Stanley. They all told me that there are a few others but they couldn't think of any off the tops of their heads. Only Stanley. They would have to research and get back to me (and this was from 3 different salsemen at 3 different stores).
So, is there anything that is 100% Good Ol' U.S. of A. made anymore???
And people wonder whats wrong with this country.
