Take the following sentence:

They said, "I'll give you a hard one."

Is this sentence grammatically incorrect? Given that each one of the persons in the collective "they" are saying the exact quote of "I'll give you a hard one?"

or

does the sentence have to be augmented to: They said, "we'll give you a hard one." which would change the direct quote?

Silly grammar question, but it's been bugging me. Thanks.

Haha. Actually, I had a heated drunken debate with a friend who works on Wall St. I just want to put him in his place.

Didn't Brad Pitt play a chick in that flick? I slept through most of that movie...:smash:

I'm just going to shut up now and hide in a cave from the wrath of Deanos.

hahaha Russ and Timber.

Thanks to everyone for the input.

After sobering up, I realized how dumb this thread was. To give some background, the conversation started when someone said, "I'll give you a hard one." Then someone followed it with, "that's what she said." Someone else followed that up with, "or he said." Then the last person added, "or they said." Someone disagreed with the last phrase, and a fight broke out. :splitspin

Ahh! Then the original statement of "I'll" is correct. Now go back and Tiger Uppercut that person in the face.
