in 1984 harley came out with the evo motor it was very dependable and unless you abused them they didnt have problems. The whole Harley breaking down thing is getting old take it from someone that has owned many bikes my gsxr's (two 1100 and one 750) all lost second gear from wheelies before they reached 7000 miles My harley didnt need tranny work till at least 15000 miles of wheelies.

harleys and wheelies just sounds wrong. And yes harleys still break down, coming home from americade my buddy lost ignition on the northway. Not a old one but 2 years old and the harness was rubbed thru and grounded.Never been stranded by my cbr ever!! I am sure everyone has there own stories so whatever.I still cant get over no reefers ride or at least dont go to lake george for the biggest tour expo in northeast with very few dirtbags.:splitspin well maybe a couple but nice family fun too

well I'll be the first to admit it honda is the best .
I took a cbr out last week and its just as hard to keep that bike from coming up on a wheelie as it is to pull a harley up .They do have the best engineering all around though. As far as your buddies bike at some point someone must have changed something (paint job, handle bars ) and didnt run the harness properly or pinched something for that to happen . I have seen my share though had a brand new 1993 wideglide with no fork oil in one fork new from the factory but I have worked in a couple of shops with both Japanese bikes and harleys and have seen Japanese bikes with many problems like my buddy's zx14 he's the owner of a shop his brand new bike had piston slap that almost sounded like the slap in my stroked motor Ive also seen a gsxr's connecting rod come through the motor at 130mph lucky the guy or any of us behind him didnt go down when all that oil came out.
In all fairness Harley has come a long way all major motorcycle brands make an excellent product
