My friend and I are looking into playing some paintball as a new hobby/sport. I know you guys are avid players.

My question is, start from nothing, how much does the gear, gun, paint balls, etc cost?

Also, whats the average price of an afternoon playing somewhere in western long island?

im trying to see what our startup costs would be.

Well a word of advice...
Do not skimp on a mask. That is the most important thing... What you want to look for is a mask that will fit properly on your face without discomfort.
My advice on masks are....
Wider faces - Proto Axis, JT ProFlex, Vforce Profilers
Slimmer faces - Dye Invision Empire E-vents

Best thing for masks are to try on what you can, and go from there. Masks range from $50+

Invest in a decent pair of pads for your elbows and knees. You do not want to damage either of those. Not fun. $25+

Gloves (Self explanatory) $15+

You can play at NYC Paintball for around $65.00 which will include paintballs entrance and rental equipment. (don't rent a mask)

So on the cheap side, playing paintball will range around 65+ depending on where you go. If you play at cousins, it will range around $100.00

btw though... he does have a good point.
You should go with people that you at least are some what comfortable with. When you tend to play with people you don't know, albeit it may feel awkward, but you never know what the other people's intentions are.
It may actually spoil your fun and give you second thoughts about the game.

I actually like playing with true tournament players, or more seasoned paintball players. For the most part, they do not have wicked intentions of injuring someone, they enjoy promoting the sport. While a person that does not play paintball, just wants to go out and shoot someone that they don't know.

Tips to save $$

I agree that the mask is the most important since you'll be sweating and your body will be emiting heat, you dont wanna try to wipe your mask during play... you can get a decent gun "tippmann 98" for $100

But the gloves and knee and elbow pads aren't necessary if you're looking to save money... I don't think I've ever played on my elbows ever and I've painting balling once every few months or so for about 6 years...getting hit in the hands hurts like a mofo but that rarely happens and the pain passes within a few minutes lol and regarding knee pads you can just double up on sweat pants....

There are coupons (they include gun rental and mask) you can get for cousins paintball as well...some from circle card which you get a sheet of 10 free passes for $30...others are buy one get one...I havent paid to play paintball for a good 2-3 years...

You cant avoid paying for paint since you have to use theres...a case of 1,000 is about 60 bucks....you can split that with a friend so in reality you can play for about $30-$40 a pop!!!

If y'all are interested we're probably going Sunday July 12th....@ cousins in LI (I should have extra passes in y'all are interested)

Realistically, yeah. You also have to keep in mind, that you don't need to spend a lot.
You can go out and maybe spend less going to a sports authority or modells for some volleyball pads.
You'll never know what happens when you play paintball, especially if it is your first time.
But if you think for a moment that, there is never a time where you need to take a knee.
Especially if you are playing outside, where you can kneel down onto anything then you would be madly mistaken. You need to protect those areas, as they are extremely important. You can easily injur a kneecap or elbow from trauma by landing on them improperly.
I have played paintball in the woods, and actual speedball tournaments on a regional and national level (AXBL, NPPL, etc). The best advice any player can give you in regards to safety are a mask and pads. But you don't need to take my word on it, you can try and play without it. In my more wreckless times, I have previously and injured my elbow from tripping and falling incorrectly due to equipment. Needless to say, I ended up falling onto my elbow, lacerating a muscle and having water in the elbow, which put me out of paintball and any other sports for a few months. Landing on a knee improperly which put me in pain for a week or so, and many tylenols and advils later I came to the realization that pads were very important.
Getting shot on your hands are also not a pretty site. I've seen people get their thumbnails almost shot off as well, where the paintball can clearly hit your nail directly and upon breakage sends little shards of paintball casing under your nail.
Now those don't happen very often, but it does happen.
So why would you want to take a chance?
Some kind of protection is better than nothing. So I'm not telling you to go and get the most expensive thing out there... Get something that will protect it...period.
