if i was you. rescrew your gas cap then take off negative on battery for 10 minutes then reattach. "engine service" light normally has to do with emissions of car. 90 percent of the time nothing wrong with car. its just so your car run's smooth.

That is absolutely incorrect.
OBD systems can throw lights for anything.
It is not necessarily an "Emission" problem that would throw off the light.

Keep in mind that now there are hundreds of sensors all over the car. One sensor can easily trip the light.
Cam sensors, crank sensors, o2 sensors, knock sensors, coolant temp sensor, mass air flow sensor any one of these can be suspect.
Don't think that for a second that any specific one/cause can be the trigger.

+1 even doing a hard reset on a comp..... 9 times out of 10 the light will be back on within 100 miles....
also alot of car makers have maintenace tied into the computers like oil changes, filter changes other preventive maintence services for example toyota/lexus

i wont disagree any of that. but there is a likely case if he just got gas and the cover wasnt tightened all the way is causes a faulty sensor reading to think theres a leak in the evaporation system setting off the sensors. and it will not correct it self even if you correct the gas cap. and normally you are charged a fee by the dealer to reset the unit with the pc controller they own due to its insane price to liscence yearly.
