Any recommendation?

How to choose?

Expecting to be used in a PCI_E slot.
Software will be Adobe CS4 Premier and Photoshop.

Anyone has experience both the 4670 and 4870 cards? How much performance difference? Warrant the $80 difference?

Many Thanks

Both of those cards are overkill for running the software you listed. Also, DirectX 11 may be up to a year away. However, from reviews that I have read, the 4870 is currently the best card on the market. I'm waiting to see what NVidia answers with.

ATI is already into the 5 series. There are cards just for this specific application that don't have all the extras for gaming, unless you want the ability to do so. Some of the really cheap cards have 1080p capabilities now just for photography and stuff. The big cards really are just designed to handle games that are resource hogs.

It depends on who you talk to but as far as I know the gtx 295 is the peak card out right now with almost 2 gigs onboard and giant clock speeds. It also depends on who manufactured the card. Different companies have different models and specs.

your better off getting a good card every so often that buying a cheap low end card every 2 years just to keep up with the minimums. Just like with this hobby, research will save you a massive headache and hole in your wallet.

Both of those are 2 dimensional programs (for the most part), and rarely hit the graphics card very hard. Use your onboard graphics card, invest in memory, and if you're doing work with large files, additional hard drives. If at all possible, dedicate a smaller hard drive to the scratch disk (and adjust your preferences to use only that disk).

When adding memory, ensure that you adjust the page file size (google it), to fully take advantage of the memory. Windows does a poor job of managing this on its own.

adobe software has its own system memory allocation settings you can set. windows auto adjust the page file size 1.5X your physical memory. this may be a problem if your ram is minimal, however with the cheap prices of ram nowadays, this issue is becoming a thing in the past.
