I am trading in my film camera stuff and they are giving me $100.00 which is better than throwing it out. So what do I buy. I am looking at around $400.00 and want something that I can screw filters on to the lenz. I was looking at a Canon Powershot SX20 12.1 MP digital.
The wide angle lenz is 20X wide angle optical zoom with Optical image stabilizer, 12.1 megapixels.
I am not a photographer but I need to take macro shots also. Can this camera do that or can I screw a close up lenz on it which I have.
Are there any other decent camera's for that price?
Thanks, I need to buy it on Monday in Manhattan

I'm a big fan of the Canon G series, but they're a bit more cash.

The one you linked does macro:
Focus RangeNormal (wide): 1.6' (50cm) - infinity
Normal (telephoto): 3.3' (1 m) - infinity
Macro: 0.39" (1cm) - 1.6' (50cm)
Digital Macro: 0" (0cm) - 3.9" (10cm) But does not have screw on lenses.

If you still want DSLR type, look at B&H used for a used version.

Forget about all that extra lense stuff, I can take any shot those cameras can.. At more than half the cost. Canon really messed up when they made this camera. Macro shots, well you just need to look at my thread.. Buy the powershot sx110is and get the under water case for the price of the rest of the cameras..

Paul,

I'm was also looking at the same camera. What's turning me off is the use of 4 AA batteries. For me that's the deal breaker.

I'm leaning towards this one:

Although this camera doesn't have an ultra-zoom, it is considered one of the best p&s on the market. Look through some of the macro shots on flickr.

Can anyone else chime in on this camera?

There are really good lithium rechargeable batteries nowadays. Things that take AA and AAA batteries don't scare me anymore. Plus, you can always find AA batteries if your camera dies.

OK I went to B&H camera in Manhattan and bought a Canon SX 20. (By the way. that place is bigger than Home Depot) The thing seems to do everything and is even now cooking dinner for me.
They gave me $75.00 for my Nikon film camera and a zoon lens. They did not want my 75 to 300 mm zoom so I may just dump it.
The canon has a 500+ zoom and a macro where I can take pictures closer than an inch.
Thats exactly what I wanted. Now I have to read through the 100 pages to figure out how to do the things I hope Ican do like take a decent picture of the tank.
They just never seem to come out nice looking. Maybe my tank is just not nice looking enough. I think thats it. :shhh:

Paul,
Let me know how you like that camera. After this thread I'm looking at one for myself!.

I found on my last Canon P&S there was a "High Florescent" setting in the white balance. I got pretty decent pics of my tank with that setting. I did however get better pictures with manual white balance. You'll have to look up how to set it on your camera.

I have to say it.

This thread is useless without pics!

Bad Coffee, I am not allowed to use the camera until after Christmas because my wife got it for me for my birthday, which is on Christmas but i did fool around with it and read the manual. It has a specific setting for aquariums. There is an actual fish icon on the screen for tanks so I am excited to try that out. The macro focuses to less than an inch so it will be good for polyps also. I just need to figure out all the other settings.
There is also an image stabilizer for camera shake.
I can never get perfectly clear images. This is a picture with my old Sony camera, it is OK but still a little out of focus.
