Hello All,

Previously I asked Dog owners to chime in about puppies and their work schedules coexisting with their dog schedules... Well now I have another question.

I've been reading up for the past few days on places to actually adopt. I've only been looking at North Shore Animal League in Port Washington, NY. What are your thoughts? I'm reading many different things on the net, but I want real people's opinions.

I've been researching for the past 8 months on the breed I want (Pembroke Welsh Corgi or a mix of that) and calculated my pet insurance costs. So I'm really looking into this before doing anything

I feel like I am ready for a dog and also feel like... it would be easier than taking care of a reef tank :sleepy:

Rescuing/adopting a dog is great. I think it actually does matter where you get the dog. My reasoning for this is because a good organization would get to know the animal before offering it for adoption. I normally refer 1st time owners and generally inexperienced dog owners to go to organizations that take pride in knowing about the individual dog and the potential person who may be adopting the dog.

Some things you want to do is to make sure hes healthy and fit for your home and situation. IE: if they get along with children and other pets.

Either way you will be giving the dog a second chance at life. Whether you go to a shelter or an organization.

I use to work with an organization called - The Staten Island Council for Animal Welfare (SICAW) and they have rehomed thousands of dogs. you can check them out. some great people.

I can vouch for North Shore Animal League. I dropped off 13 puppies and they were truly cared for and I was able to track them through out their adoptions. They really do take good care of their animals.

Yup, my pitbull and lab had a night out in the town...a month and some weeks later she was so "Fat", we put her on a diet...later on she gave birth to 13 puppies...pitbull lab mixes..I kept them and fattened them all up for 3 months (imgine 13 puppies running around pooping, eating..lol), cost me a firtune and unfortunately had to take them to North shore..it killed me andmy wife to let our babies go, but at least I knew where they went later on. A+ for noth shore. They are also a no kill facility.:dog2:

My family adopted a dog from NSAL in 1996 and then again in 2002, we provided NSAL with references and they actually called the references we provided. The NSAL even called us once every month for about 8 months to make sure the dogs where fine. I would recommend the NSAL. You are getting a review which is almost 8 yrs old but i think you should conifidence in this location.

If you are looking for a specific breed....check out petfinder or a corgi rescue.

FYI - A dog is not easier to take care of than a fish tank. :)

I have a corgie mix that I adopted from North Shore. Actually I have 2 dogs from them (other is an irish terrier mix). My dogs are like my family. Looking back I can't imagine not getting them out of that cage. The truth is no matter what dog you get you're gonna love it. Even though taking care of a dog is a responsibility, you're going to want to do it because you care for your pet. It's not as much of a chore as a water change :)

Although I prefer the "kill shelters", because I know they will be put down if no one adopts them.;(
Almost all the animals I currently share our home with came from the NYC Animal Care & Control shelters.:flower:

I recommend North Shore Animal League as ive adopted a few cats from there myself. Like Awilda said adoptiong from a "kill shelter" is preferred because all the dogs/cats there are on borrowed time before they are put down. Either way good luck with your findings :)

I work in port wash. & one of my members is retired. He donates most of his free time to North Hempstead Animal Shelter. If everybody that woks there cares as much as he does. You could not go wrong adopting from there. Ask for Pat Lynch. Tell him James, the Chef From Port Washington Yacht Club reffered you.

Dude I didn't even know we had a kill shelter around here.

I'm going to do some research as to how a dog is designated to a kill and a non kill. I'm curious as to why.

James, as always thanks for the helpful advice and reference. It'll definitely come in handy! Curious as to how your tank is doing... haven't seen any updates.

I'm going to do some research as to how a dog is designated to a kill and a non kill. I'm curious as to why.

aznt, the vicious, and or very sick are never put up for adoption - they are automaticly set aside for to be put down!
The others who are adoptable are given a very short time in their little cages to find a human that is willing to take them home. I'm not sure what the time frame is now, it use to be seven (7) days!
After that they are put down (KILLED) in order to make room for the next poor guy/gal that is unfortunate enough to find itself in a shelter.;( Some times they get lucky, and a No Kill, or foster home gets them out in the nick of time, but definitely not often enough.:(

A lot of the animals are in shelters due to no fault of their own:
Families move to a "No Pets Allowed" home.
Owner dies, and the animal is left without a person.
They got out of their yards, homes, and get picked up by "Animal Rescue Crew".
People buy/adopt without researching, and find that they can't handle the responsibility, so off to the shelter goes the fur ball that they once swore to care for.
Divorce!
Family member with Allergies.
Loss of job, therefor loss of income.

The reasons these poor animals end up in the shelters are numerous. I only mentioned a few.

God this post is making me feel awful. I wish more people would spay/neuter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How I wish I had a farm...........................

The above is how we ended up with 3 dogs & 5 cats, and if I did have that farm there is no telling how many we'd have.:)

BTW, I had heard a while back that the "No Kill" shelters only accept animals that they know they can adopt out. Also that when they have animals that are not adoptable they send them to the kill shelters.:sigh: I sincerely hope I heard wrong......

I have seen animals killed for NO REASON other then they need space. There are no actual hard set rules because the dog can growl once and then they say its vicious which is RIDICULOUS

every day about 50 dogs and even MORE cats are put to sleep in just the Manhattan Animal Care and Control alone. There is one also in brooklyn and staten island plus all the other kill shelters.

Its a horrific thing

Rich go to the Brooklyn one on Linden Blvd. almost every cage has a pit in it.;(

Coop, back in 1972 I walked into the ASPCA in Manhattan, and as I moved towards this particular cage the worker yelled that the dog in that cage was vicious "don't go near it". Being a teenager I went for it. The dog in it never groweld. I put my hand out to him, he sniffed then licked. I looked at the card he was slated to be killed that evening. I had an hour to convince my mom, and get my pastor to bring the money for the adoption fee, and his car to get that dog out. No problem!LOL
I had that dog for 17years, the very BEST dog I ever had! I still cry when I think of him. Oh, and by the way he turned out to be a wolf Hybrid.;)

Sorry aznts, didn't mean to hijack your thread!!!!

Why is it mostly pits? Is it because there is an abundance of that breed or because people are afraid to house them because of the bad rep they get?
