Well many of you might not know, but I retired in April 09. I'm looking to do things to stay busy maybe things I might not know of in the area. It is getting really boring at home and you can only watch somuch TV and the computer gets boring as well. I'm not your normal retiree as I'm only 30. Any suggestions out there?

Go back to school to study things you never had time for before.
Start a second career.
Get involved in community activities - theater, music, arts, museums.

There are a zillion things to do. 30 & retired and bored is completely unnecessary.

Larissa I can't actually go back to school or get another job. That would violate my pension contract. I can study at home which I have been doing and doing some small experimenting with things. And also Larissa if you experienced what I did over the last 12 years somethings just don't excite you anymore. And as for the what did I do answer. I worked for a large construction firm in the city, I really can't go into details( court ordered Gag) but anyways here I am toady 11 months into retirement and bored. Korea in august but that still leaves a gap of time.

Dude you sound like a guy someone needs to write a book about or something. Gag orders, working somewhere for 12 years and you're only 30...I envied you for a second when you said you're retired but now ur making me think....
What I can tell you is...study Wing Chun...Martial arts is a way of life and with the time you have it would be perfect.

That's a fairly obnoxious pension contract.

You can't take even community school type classes? I mean, you may not be into it, but I've taken after-work classes or early morning classes in stuff like cake decorating, cooking, photography, acting. They have dance classes, art classes, even stuff like "how to fix your car." Not really career-changing topics, but just hobby things. What about that?

They may not be life-threatening excitement, but it can be fun to get into something completely new and different.

Or how about something like the Sierra club? Go on hikes with groups, ski trips, things of that nature. Have you checked the NY meetup.com to see what's around? There are a ton of ideas on there.

Yea any type of schooling is prohibited, They say it is a means to a new job and not part of the contract, and yes even a cooking class is not allowed. And as for the hiking thing, I do that a lot in the warmer months. I live in NJ and go to a lot of the parks and things like that. I was looking into breeding my Great Dane maybe. He is AKC and has full papers. Just a thought. And topmav do not envy me, I miss the routine of everyday work. It sounds good to retire until it actually happens

Jaa, did you have this contract reviewed by an attorney before you signed it? It sounds terrible. I'd take it to a contract lawyer and have it reviewed again, to make sure they can hold you to it; I can't see the if you wanted to take an oil painting class, cooking class, dance class, acting class, that they could legally prohibit you.

Even with a contract you've already signed, a court can deem parts of it unconscionable and void those parts.

Assuming the contract is 100% enforceable, is it really what you want? It might be worth it to you to breach the contract, give up the remainder of your pension (I know that sounds awful), and go on with your life. With all the years you've put in, that sounds terrible, but it's something for you to consider - you need to weigh what's more important to you and whether it's worth it. Not just financially, but for your own sanity and well-being.

Larissa it was written up with 2 of my attorneys. It is not horrible as I have the monetary side well in my favor. And yes if I were to take any classes or courses it voids my contract. Trust me I have thought about this with my GF and for me to void my contract and go back to school would not beworth losing what I have(house Etc.) I would not be able to keep these things as school doesn't pay you at all and there is no guarentee as to the money I would make after school
