hey guys n gals I'm adopting a puppy soon. I currently use pinsol and lysol 4in1 to clean the tiles downstairs. they both smell like ammonia and want to switch to a different all purpose cleaner without ammonia so the puppy will not start pee'ing all over the place.

Any recommendations guys?
much appreciated.

From what i've read, Diluted white vinegar is the best all purpose cleaner?

Aaron.

we got our 8 wks puppy, the first week of January and started him on the wee wee pads, and he does both #1 & #2 on the pad. You just need to keep and eye on him or her. When we are not supervising the puppy, we put him in a dog crate. This is recommended for potty training.

Have you checked the store, I am pretty sure they make some products that are pet safe. I cannot think of the names offhand but I have seen them.

DO NOT use any products that contain amonia or bleach. It smeels like pee to them and they will pee wherever they smell pee. There is a cleaner in the pet stores called Nature's Miracle. I use it to clean just about anything, except my tank. I buy it by the gallon, and I even bought a spray bottle and spray it on my furniature too. Just about any cleaning product is ok though as long as it does not contain bleach or amonia. I am a moderator for i-love-dogs.com. Just go there and register for that forum and we will answer any dog related issue you might have. Don't be discouraged if you don't get an immediate answer though. Some of those people will thouroughly research your problem before giving you the correct answer.

One very important step in house training a dog. When you get the puppy do not take it inside right away. Take it to the spot where you want it to use the bathroom. Don't go in until the puppy goes to the bathroom and then praise him/her. Works great for med to large dogs. I have trained every dog I ever had like that and maybe only 1 - 2 accidents in the house after that. I use lysol and pine sol personally and I have 4 dogs.

I used a crate to train Buster. As a general rule, dogs will not pee or poop where they sleep, unless you leave them in there for too long. Until puppies are about 6 months old, they need to go out about every two hours until their bladders mature. They can normally hold it for 6 hours at night when they sleep, but they must be taken out as soon as they wake up or they might have an accident. At about 6 months, they can hold it for 3 to 4 hours. And about a year some can hold it for about 8 hours while you are at work, although I would pay a dog walker to take your dog out for you mid-day if your dog really can't hold it that long. Every dog is different, just use your best judgement. I never did the training pad thing because I didn't want my dogs going in the house for any reason. But since I am a stay at home mom, I have plenty of time to monitor my dog in case it needs to go out. I think newspapers are the best. Some dogs chew up the puppy pads. If you have one of those dogs, use newspaper.

To add to the above if, or when your puppy does have an accident use vinegar after thoroughly cleaning the area. The vinegar is suppose to kill any ammonia smell. You may not smell the urine, but you can bet your bottom dollar that the pup will so saturated the area wil that vinegar.:)
Nature's Miracle never worked as well as the white vinegar for us.:)

Thanks, it's actually not the wetjets, it's the regular swiffer, but you can buy those pre-wet pads rather than the bone dry ones. Not sure if they're the same chemicals, but our critters don't seem to have issues.

Actually its not an allercic reaction to them. All swifter products contain the same chemicals that antifreeze contains. So they actually get sick from them and can also dies from them.

We got lucky with our dog, she just went outside on her own since the first day we have had her. The only stains in our old place were from saltwater, lol

Larrissa It is actually very true. Swifter is a company and wants to sell their product and will protect themselves by any means. Know I have seen mythbusters do the swifter test and it is true on that show. I have looked it up the chemical make up and it comes out almost identical to antifreeze. And there was a show on animal planet and the chemist on there said the same exact thing.
