Hey all, I'm jumping on the bandwagon. I just graduated Saint John's University with a BS in Finance this Jan 2010 with a 3.6 GPA. If there is anybody in the financial industry (I know this is very broad!) I 'm looking for an entry level position. Ideally, I'm aiming for an analyst position but honestly in this economic environment I'm not considerably picky.

If there is anybody with good footing at a company that is looking to hire, I would be so appreciative of your assistance.

Thank you so much.
Aaron

Good luck Aaron. I don't envy anyone in this job market. My son just graduated last May and he found a job. Unfortunately for my wife and I, he landed the job in South Korea. He's there for a minimum of one year. Teaching English. He loves it, but that's what this job market has come to :sad2:

In all seriousness Aaron, best of luck in your search. Having a great community like MR behind you can be advantageous to you.

Aaron i was in the accounting/finance industry until I got laid off, I am going to tell you our industry is one of the hardest sectors hit during this recession. Eventhough you are looking for a job in this really tough market i suggest you send out your resume to accoutning finance recruiters and try to land a temp job. one thing i am going to tell you is that alot of companies are looking for experience. I dont know how many years of experience you have but you graduated from a really good school which is a plus, so good luck with your job search and if you want pm your email and we can look for something together bro i am also looking for a job, we can help each other

Good luck on your job hunt. When you go job hunting make sure you carry a shotgun so when you find a job, you can kill it and eat it. :catsmiley

Ahh thanks so much Russ, been looking since last November. Awaiting many companies to reply and leaving my options open. I'm glad your son found something that he enjoys, finding something your passionate about and not just going through the motions is amazing. I greatly appreciate your wise words and the hope you give

That sounds like a plan, I've exhausted all of my networks to no avail. Hopefully something will come up for the both of us. I dont have any entry level experience in finance which is the issue. Initially I had the goal of going to law school - I have bankruptcy and foreclosure paralegal experience but it doesnt help me much if trying to find a position in finance. My email is [email protected] - send me an email lets keep in touch that way.

Biggest question is. What type of Finance do you want to do?

I honestly want to try investment banking eventually - but right now its not realistic. A position which utilizes financial and analytical skills and performing forecasts and creating budgets etc - Profits and losses etc.
I'm really open to pretty much anything from wealth management to analyzing financial statements - I'm finding getting my foot in the door is the hardest part

I thank you all,
Sincerely
Aaron

If you're looking for IB, it's going to be tough in this market. Also, because St John's is not necessarily a Target School for IBs. You're competing with people from Harvard, Yale, Penn, Princeton, Chicago, Stanford, MIT, Columbia, etc.

But if you eventually want to move into it, make sure you don't pigeonhole yourself in the backoffice or any other functions were transitions to IBs are unknown.

Right now, it's all about networking. You can also try for smaller boutiques, where pedigree is not as important.

Here are great websites:

Best of luck!

Hey Aaron,

It's tough. In addition to the whole target school thing (I didn't come from one)... it's much better to be SURE you want to do IB instead of just saying I'll give it a shot. What do you want to do in IB (Corp Fin, S+T, Research?). Do you even want something in front office? middle? back?

I had this dilemma last year when I graduated (in addition to deciding between a Corp. Fin offer and a Audit). What I would do if I were you at this point is check your alumni database and see who can help you. In addition to that join Beta Alpha Psi on campus and any other professional groups (even if you don't think it applies to you)- ie. ALPFA, NABA, ASCEND, etc. You can meet a ton of people which is what it will come down to, as Fernando mentioned in the above post.

Also don't think it's not possible, that's already setting yourself up to failure. Although banks have had a tough year those that are financially sound are hiring intensely because of new business. Some companies that are hiring for Financial Analyst positions within corporate finance are American Express, Abbot Labs (in Chicago though), Unilever, Kraft, etc. Look at their analyst programs. Feel free to PM me as well.

Also if and when you do get that interview for your dream investment banking job. Make sure you know your stuff. Meaning, CAPM, DCF, and doing a full SWOT analysis -- all this on the fly. Be prepared to do case studies as well.

Check out the IRS, if you don't have better prospects. You might be able to slot right into a revenue officer job.
